Where to Camp in the Netherlands: All 12 Provinces

Where to camp in the Netherlands? Start with an authorized overnight base, then build your route around the coast, wetlands, forests or countryside you want to explore.

Netherlands camping includes very different trips: a Zeeland beach holiday, a Drenthe heathland walk, a Flevoland birdwatching visit or an Utrecht castle-and-river day. This directory brings together guides to all twelve European provinces.

The official tourism explanation distinguishes the Netherlands from North Holland and South Holland, which are two of its twelve provinces. Overseas parts of the Kingdom require separate destination planning.

Coastal dunes, lakes, wetlands and forests

For coastal landscapes, compare North Holland, South Holland and Zeeland. Friesland adds lakes and island excursions, while Groningen offers Lauwersmeer outings and city culture.

Drenthe and Gelderland suit heathland and forest walks. Utrecht combines wooded ridges with river routes and castles. Overijssel offers river valleys, hills and wetlands, while Flevoland adds polder landscapes and wetland history.

North Brabant provides inland dunes and forest ponds. Limburg includes northern river landscapes, with southern hill itineraries best planned as a separate excursion or base.

Choose marked routes that match your fitness, transport, available daylight and the season. A beach entrance, riverbank or wildlife viewpoint is a day destination unless overnight access is explicitly authorized.

Book your overnight base first

Established tent and touring pitches offer options for travellers arriving by bicycle, car, caravan or motorhome.

A small walking or cycling pitch is a different product from a powered touring pitch. Specify equipment dimensions, guests, pets, power needs and dates when reserving.

Some campsites have already closed their 2026 touring season. A lodge or chalet can have a different calendar, so rental availability does not prove that tent pitches remain open.

Confirm drinking water, toilets, shower charges, barrier hours and motorhome servicing directly.

Free camping: verify current permission

Staatsbosbeheer closed its seventeen pole-camping grounds in 2020. Its current camping FAQ directs visitors to nature-camping alternatives. Old map pins do not establish present permission.

Natuurmonumenten’s camping guidance distinguishes authorized camping from unrestricted wild camping and identifies special canoe-camping arrangements in De Wieden. Check their current fees, booking requirements, capacity and access separately.

No free authorized tent pitch was confirmed for the specific provincial base itineraries in this series.

A nature-camping card, a campsite payment and permission to stay overnight serve different purposes. Ask the responsible manager or municipality about any precise proposed exception.

Compare the complete camping price

Each provincial guide links to a selected operator’s published tariffs. Compare the same occupancy, equipment and services.

Check tourist tax, electricity, shower tokens, waste charges, booking fees and any required camping card. A small bicycle-tent rate should not be used as the quote for a family arriving by car.

The selected North Brabant operator publishes a 2026 pitch price but retains an older tourist-tax reference. Obtain the current tax before calculating the total.

October 2026 tariff checks are dated references. Reconfirm future prices, availability and minimum stays directly with each operator.

Restaurants and cultural stops

Pair a walk with a restaurant or museum near that day’s destination. Options across the provincial guides include Batavialand, Zuiderzeemuseum, castles in Utrecht, regional history in Venlo, art in Groningen and coastal heritage in Westkapelle and Hellevoetsluis.

Check menus, kitchen hours, admission and museum calendars before departure. Food venues inside open-air museums may follow the museum season or require an admission ticket.

Season, transport and equipment

Late spring through early autumn generally offers the easiest tent-camping conditions. The actual campsite calendar and weather forecast take priority.

Wind matters on dykes, beaches and lake shores. Autumn brings shorter days, and forest or wetland trails may be muddy.

For Wadden Island excursions, check ferry reservations, bicycle or vehicle carriage, island transport and the last return. Use appropriate guided excursions for mudflat outings. A mainland campsite reservation does not include ferry travel or island accommodation.

Bring waterproof layers, suitable shoes, drinking water, offline maps, a headlamp, first-aid supplies and overnight insulation. Motorhomes need pitches that fit their dimensions and confirmed wastewater facilities.

For a longer European route, continue with the Belgium camping directory and the France camping directory.
