Limburg camping ranges from northern river and dune landscapes to southern hills. This guide uses a Smakt–Venray base for Maasduinen outings and a cultural day in Venlo. South Limburg deserves a separate itinerary or another overnight base.
Limburg camping: Maasduinen and river outings
The Maasduinen visitor-centre information provides a starting point for permitted walking routes.
Choose a signed entrance and confirm conditions for your group. Forest paths, inland dunes and river scenery offer varied day-trip options.
Use regional visitor information to plan cycling routes. A river visit does not automatically include swimming permission or overnight access; follow local instructions and use designated facilities.
Camping at an authorized base
Camping De Oude Barrier, at Smakt–Venray, lists standard, comfort, nature and accessible pitch categories.
Confirm your tent or vehicle dimensions and the facilities included with your chosen pitch. The operator limits dogs and asks guests to contact it first.
Check current opening dates, toilets, showers, drinking water and waste disposal. A campsite booking does not authorize camping beside a Maasduinen trail or riverbank.
Nearby free camping
No free authorized tent pitch was verified for this northern Limburg route. Riverside parking and forest pull-offs should not be treated as overnight permission.
Check any proposed alternative with the responsible land manager and municipality, including permits and maximum stays, or book an established campsite.
Limburg camping prices: 2026
De Oude Barrier publishes a standard two-person pitch with a tent, caravan or camper and electricity at €25.50 per night.
Tourist tax adds €2 per person per night, giving a starting total of €29.50 for two adults. Garbage disposal is separately listed at €3.80 per bag.
Comfort and accessible pitch categories are €32.20 before tourist tax. Confirm equipment allowances, parking, shower inclusions and the complete quote. Accepted pets and additional guests can add charges.
Restaurants and museums
De Bosrand, near Arcen, offers a pancake restaurant for a meal stop during a Maasduinen excursion. Check opening hours and the current menu.
The Limburgs Museum in Venlo provides a regional-culture outing. Consult its ticket information before visiting.
An Arcen meal or a Venlo museum visit can complement a shorter walking day. Allow separate driving and parking time for each destination.
Season, distances and equipment
Late spring through early autumn is generally convenient for tent camping and cycling. Confirm the campsite’s actual season directly.
From Smakt, estimate 25–40 km or 30–50 minutes by road to a selected Maasduinen entrance or Arcen. Venlo is approximately 35–50 km away, with a journey of 40–60 minutes. Exact routes and parking affect these estimates.
Bring rainwear, good walking shoes, maps, water, a headlamp and sleeping equipment suited to overnight temperatures. Use designated swimming access and give wildlife space.
Motorhomes need a suitable pitch and confirmed servicing facilities. If adding Maastricht or southern hill walks, allow another day or book a second base.
Sources and published tariffs checked October 13, 2026. Distances and times are broad planning estimates. Confirm current permission, opening dates, route conditions and the complete booking price before travel.
