Utrecht Camping Guide: Heuvelrug Forests, Rivers & Castles

Utrecht camping combines countryside near the Kromme Rijn with wooded ridge walks and castle visits. This guide uses Odijk as a touring base. Select one river or forest outing for the day, then add a nearby cultural stop without rushing between the city and every hilltop entrance.

Utrecht camping: Heuvelrug and Kromme Rijn

The Utrechtse Heuvelrug regional guide introduces wooded hills, walking and cycling routes, and castle destinations between Utrecht and Amersfoort. Match a trail to fitness and path conditions; it is a rolling landscape, not an alpine route.

The Kromme Rijn guide offers a contrasting river-and-heritage itinerary southeast of Utrecht. Follow permitted paths beside water and use designated swimming areas rather than assuming a riverbank is suitable.

Camping within the chosen base area

Camping Prinsenhof at Odijk is a paid base in the Kromme Rijn area with small-tent, family-tent and touring-vehicle categories. Confirm the pitch and vehicle dimensions, water supply and servicing. Its booking does not grant forest overnight rights.

The operator requires at least three nights for weekends in July and August and does not take arrivals on Sundays or holidays. Check the actual opening calendar and arrival day before building your itinerary.

Nearby free camping: no confirmed site

No currently free, authorized tent pitch was verified for the Odijk–Heuvelrug route. A riverside picnic area or wooded car park is a daytime stop unless the manager expressly permits an overnight arrangement. Ask about location-specific permission or use a booked campsite.

Prinsenhof publishes a €30 two-person touring or large-family-tent pitch including electricity, warm showers and Wi-Fi, but excluding €1.24 tourist tax per person per night. Two adults total €32.48 with that stated tax.

A small bicycle tent for two people is €17.50 before tax (€19.98 with the two-person tax). Confirm eligibility, car arrangements and extra guest charges; this is not the same product as a full touring pitch.

Restaurants, castles and museums

Landgoed Zonheuvel’s restaurant in Doorn offers a meal stop in the Heuvelrug estate setting. Check current menu, public service and table availability before driving from camp.

The Heuvelrug museum guide includes Huis Doorn, Amerongen Castle and the National Military Museum. Pick a museum near the day’s walking entrance. Book any timed admission separately and distinguish a castle garden visit from access to the interior.

Season, distances and equipment

Late spring through early autumn generally suits tent camping and cycling, though each site sets its own season. From Odijk estimate 15–25 km / 20–35 minutes to Doorn, 15–20 km / 25–40 minutes to central Utrecht and 25–40 km / 35–55 minutes to the Soest museum area. Traffic, parking and the selected forest gate affect these estimates.

Bring waterproof layers, sturdy shoes, offline maps, water and a headlamp for returning to your pitch. Choose an insulated mat and sleeping bag for overnight lows. Cyclists should check route surfaces; motorhomes should confirm a serviced pitch and any city vehicle-access requirements.

Sources and published tariffs checked October 13, 2026. Distances and times are broad planning estimates. Confirm current permission, opening dates, route conditions and the full booking price before travel.
