Italy camping can mean a shaded Adriatic pitch, a quiet lake base, a hill-country stay or an alpine valley. This directory connects guides for all 20 regions, helping you choose a manageable route with nature, established camping options, food and cultural visits.
Each regional guide concentrates on a practical base. It is a starting itinerary, not a claim to cover every town, beach or campsite in that region. Choose a landscape first, then allow enough time to explore it without moving camp every morning.

For alpine valleys, start with Aosta Valley, Piedmont or Trentino-Alto Adige. Lombardy’s guide uses a foothill base rather than assuming high-mountain conditions. For lakes and countryside, consider Lazio, Umbria, Tuscany or Marche. Coastal itineraries feature Liguria, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria. Sardinia and Sicily deserve separate island travel plans with ferry or flight arrangements built in.
These are selected themes, not limits on what each region offers. A coastal guide does not imply the region lacks mountains, and an alpine base does not make every trail suitable for a casual walk.
Campsites, prices and reservation checks
The regional guides link established campsite operators and published tariff pages. Some charge separately for people, equipment, cars and electricity. Others sell a pitch package including two people. Compare like-for-like totals and check the pitch dimensions, power allowance, shower charges, vehicle service and local tourist levy.
Most quoted tables in this series are labelled 2026. There are important exceptions: Barco Reale in Tuscany had already published 2027 rates at the source check, and Punta Navaccia’s €27 promotion in Umbria was marked no longer valid. Those figures are clearly labelled in their guides; neither should be treated as an available 2026 booking quote. Some tariff tables have unclear inclusions or date wording, which the relevant guide identifies.
Source check: 16 October 2026. A published tariff is not proof of pitch availability or a future-season price. Obtain a current quote covering your dates, party, equipment, pets, taxes and supplements. Confirm the opening period and cancellation terms before paying a deposit. Do not rely on a price alone to establish that winter sanitary facilities or a pool will be operating.
Free camping and permission
No specific free overnight campsite was verified for the selected regional itineraries. Their established paid bases provide a concrete alternative while you check any other option with its manager and the relevant local authority. A free beach, ordinary car park or picnic site is not proof of permission to pitch a tent or deploy camping equipment.
For motorhomes, Article 185 of the Highway Code, published by ACI, distinguishes permitted roadside parking from camping when the vehicle rests only on its wheels, does not discharge fluids and stays within its own footprint. This distinction does not grant permission to park in a prohibited location or set up an outdoor camp. Check local restrictions and signs separately. Wastewater must go to appropriate disposal facilities.
Protected areas and outdoor safety
Check the actual park or reserve before travelling, including trail notices, fire restrictions and any booking requirement. Keep tents and vehicles at permitted sites and use marked access paths. Do not disturb coastal dune vegetation or wildlife. Carry water, weather protection, offline maps and a charged phone; call 112 in an emergency.
Mountain outings require a separate assessment of altitude, snow, daylight and weather. A short valley route can be an enjoyable alternative to an exposed summit. Coastal and lake visits also need current conditions: a scenic beach or a marked water route does not establish that swimming is safe for your ability that day.
Food and culture beyond the pitch
Use the regional articles to pair a manageable outdoor outing with a museum, historic town or archaeological site. Examples include Martinsicuro’s tower, Metaponto’s museum, Scolacium, Fermo’s cisterns, Termoli, Vinci, Glorenza and Venice. Check current opening times and admission directly; some historic settings are viewable outside while their interiors remain private or closed.
Each guide includes a named restaurant or identified campsite dining option with an information link. Menus, seasonal hours and reservations require a direct check. If food service is limited in a small village or outside summer, keep a simple backup meal at camp.
Build a realistic Italy camping itinerary
For one week, choose one region or two neighbouring bases rather than trying to cross the country. For a longer trip, group connected areas: an alpine valley circuit, an Adriatic journey, central lakes and hills, or a southern coastal route. These are planning ideas rather than measured driving schedules. Add transfer days for islands and leave room for weather and rest.
Check the final campsite approach before taking a long motorhome or towing a caravan. Historic centres may have restricted traffic zones, narrow streets or limited parking; leave the vehicle at an appropriate base and verify onward public transport. A short map distance can still take time on mountain roads or busy coastal routes.
When to go and what to pack
Spring and early autumn are useful starting windows for many coastal, hill and cultural itineraries. Higher alpine trips often need a summer plan and their own snow assessment. July and August can bring busy pitches, heat and minimum-stay conditions, so reserve suitable sites ahead. Confirm winter operation directly rather than extrapolating from a year-round price column.
Pack a sleeping system suited to expected night temperatures, waterproof layers, comfortable shoes, sun protection, repellent, a headlamp and drinking water. For a powered pitch, confirm the connector and amperage with the operator. Keep copies of bookings and arrival details available offline. Use the regional directory above to turn your broad route into practical daily stages.
