This Austria camping guide brings all nine federal states together in one practical directory. Choose a region for its landscape, then build a manageable stay around an authorized campsite, local food and one cultural visit. Our regional guides connect the Danube, lake districts, alpine valleys and Vienna without assuming that every destination belongs in a single road trip.
Research and published tariffs were checked on 16 October 2026. A dated tariff, an undated price table and a dynamic starting price are different kinds of evidence: each regional entry explains which one it uses and which supplements still need confirming.
Austria camping guide: choose your federal state
Open a card below for the campsite, tariff notes, restaurant, nature ideas, cultural stops and practical planning details for that state.
Burgenland
Reed landscapes, birdwatching and Lake Neusiedl from Podersdorf.
Lower Austria
The Wachau, riverside cycling and cultural Krems.
Upper Austria
Danube outings from Au and a museum day in Linz.
Salzburg
Salzach walks, Mirabell Gardens and historic city streets.
Vorarlberg
Nenzing, alpine scenery and Feldkirch’s castle museum.
Choose a route that leaves time outdoors
For an eastern trip, combine Vienna with Lower Austria’s Danube scenery or Burgenland’s lake and bird habitats. These offer different experiences: a city museum day, vineyard-country cycling and a quiet observation walk should each have enough time. Avoid treating them as quick stops between long drives.
For a central journey, choose Upper Austria’s riverside base, Salzburg’s city gardens or Styria’s Mur valley. Two or three nights in one place make it easier to enjoy a cycle route, sit down to regional food and keep an indoor cultural option for a wet day. Carinthia gives another lake-focused choice around Millstatt.
Tyrol and Vorarlberg suit a western valley-and-mountain trip. Staying in a valley campsite does not make every nearby alpine route suitable for every visitor. Check the approach, total walking time, elevation gain, weather, return transport and seasonal closures before choosing a higher outing. Keep a lower-level alternative ready.
Authorized camping and verified price examples
Use the established campsites linked in the regional guides and confirm that your equipment and dates are accepted. Do not use a scenic car park as evidence of overnight permission. No specific free authorized overnight place has been verified for this series; obtain clear local permission before choosing an alternative site.
| Example base | Published price example | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Krems, Lower Austria | €50.70 for two adults with the specified vehicle pitch, listed taxes and electricity. | 2026 tariff; Danube-front and other extras separate. |
| Au an der Donau, Upper Austria | €44.80 in the listed lower period for two adults, qualifying pitch and tax. | Includes the stated 6 kWh allowance; July–August costs more. |
| Wiesing, Tyrol | €44 for two taxable adults on a comfort pitch in the stated autumn 2026 period. | Includes up to 4 kWh daily; other extras separate. |
| Vienna, MICAMPA Wien Donau | Tent from €22.50 including one adult; caravan pitch from €50 including two. | Starting prices; obtain the final date-specific total. |
These examples are not interchangeable. Compare the same party size, equipment, season and services. Some operators charge people and pitch separately; others bundle two adults. Electricity may have an allowance, a flat charge or metered consumption. Taxes and environmental charges can also be additional. Read the linked operator tariff before making a reservation.
Restaurants and culture by region
Each state guide includes a named restaurant or food stop with a source link. Examples range from Poldi Fitzka in Krems and Alter Fuchs in Salzburg to the Inntal-Stadl in Wiesing and Garfrenga in Nenzing. Seasonal campsite restaurants may close before the pitches do: bring supplies for arrival and check kitchen hours separately.
Build culture around the base rather than a long checklist. Krems offers its Kunstmeile, Linz the Lentos, Knittelfeld railway heritage, Feldkirch the Schattenburg museum and Vienna a major art-museum day. Opening days and ticket arrangements can change; the regional links lead to the relevant institutions.
Seasons, transport and equipment
Check the campsite’s actual opening dates before planning a late-autumn trip. Several guides use 2026 seasonal tariffs; they must not be read as confirmed 2027 prices. Winter opening at one site says nothing about mountain access or facilities elsewhere. Ask which water, sanitation and restaurant services operate during your stay.
Distances and driving times in our guides are approximate planning ranges, not live navigation or public-transport timetables. Check the chosen route, vehicle restrictions and current transport connections. In cities, leave the camping vehicle at an appropriate base and plan the return journey before an evening out.
Pack waterproof layers, suitable shoes, warm bedding, a torch, drinking water and offline maps. Cyclists should add lights, a lock and repair supplies. Mountain outings require equipment matched to the route and conditions. Use campsite waste and wastewater facilities, respect quiet hours and leave nature areas as you found them.
