This Lower Austria camping guide combines Danube scenery, vineyard country and the compact cultural quarter of Krems. Use the authorized base below for a regional stay with time for nature, local food and culture. All prices are in euros; research and published tariffs were checked on 16 October 2026.
Lower Austria camping guide: nature and routes
Use Krems for riverside walks and cycle outings into the Wachau. Choose a short out-and-back ride before attempting a longer vineyard route: hills above the river demand more effort than the waterfront. Keep to signed paths and leave room for walkers on shared routes. The official Danube tourism website is useful for current regional routes and seasonal services.
Authorized camping and checked tariffs
ÖAMTC Donau Camping Krems publishes its 2026 tariffs and a season of 27 March–31 October. A motorhome pitch, or caravan with car, costs €18; adults aged 15 and over cost €10.50 each. Two adults therefore pay €39 before local/regional taxes of €2.60 per adult and optional electricity of €6.50. With those taxes and electricity, the example totals €50.70 per night. A Danube-front position adds €5. Do not treat this example as a tent tariff: tent-and-bicycle pitches have a separate scale.
Confirm the complete charge for your party, equipment and dates before booking. Check reception times, pitch dimensions, seasonal services and any minimum stay. Published examples do not guarantee availability.
Free overnight camping
No specific free authorized overnight site has been verified for this itinerary. Use the established campsite, or confirm permission with the relevant local authority and landowner before choosing another location. A scenic parking area or picnic site does not by itself establish permission to camp.
Restaurant and local food
Try Poldi Fitzka at the Landesgalerie in Krems. The regional restaurant offers an easy meal stop beside the museum, with Austrian dishes including cooked beef. Check its current menu and opening days before combining lunch with an exhibition.
Culture beyond the campsite
The Kunstmeile Krems brings several institutions together, including the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich, Kunsthalle and caricature museum. Choose one exhibition for an unhurried afternoon rather than rushing between all three.
Practical itinerary and access
Allow approximately 1–3 km between the campsite area and cultural stops in Krems, depending on the destination; a local walk may take 15–40 minutes. These are planning estimates, not a measured route. Spend one day around Krems and a second on the river. Verify the October closing date before a late-autumn arrival, and check bicycle carriage rules separately if returning by public transport.
Bring waterproof clothing, suitable walking shoes, water, warm bedding, a torch and an offline route map. Check weather and local notices before a longer outing. Use designated waste and wastewater facilities, respect quiet hours and follow current fire restrictions.
