Salzburg Camping Guide: Riverside Walks & City Heritage

This Salzburg camping guide combines Salzach riverside walks, city gardens and a camping base outside the historic centre. Use the authorized base below for a regional stay with time for nature, local food and culture. All prices are in euros; research and published tariffs were checked on 16 October 2026.

Salzburg camping guide: nature and routes

Begin with a gentle walk beside the Salzach and time in the city’s gardens. Mirabell Palace and Gardens provides formal planting and views towards the old town. For a quieter visit, go early and keep a rain alternative ready. A mountain excursion is a separate undertaking: city walking shoes and a spare afternoon are no substitute for proper route planning and suitable alpine equipment.

Authorized camping and checked tariffs

Camping Nord-Sam, Samstraße 22a, 5023 Salzburg, is an established camping base. The operator’s published tariff lists the car-plus-small-tent component, for a tent accommodating at most two people, at €10, €11 or €14 across its three price seasons. These are partial charges, not a complete nightly camping price. Per-person charges, applicable taxes, electricity and any other supplements must be confirmed separately, together with the season applying to your dates. We have not verified a complete two-person total from the operator’s accessible tariff and therefore do not quote one. Request a written total before booking.

Confirm the complete charge for your party, equipment and dates before booking. Check reception times, pitch dimensions, seasonal services and any minimum stay. Published examples do not guarantee availability.

Free overnight camping

No specific free authorized overnight site has been verified for this itinerary. Use the established campsite, or confirm permission with the relevant local authority and landowner before choosing another location. A scenic parking area or picnic site does not by itself establish permission to camp.

Restaurant and local food

Alter Fuchs in Linzer Gasse is a traditional Salzburg inn serving Austrian cooking with contemporary touches. Combine it with a walk on the right bank of the river. Check the current kitchen hours and reserve ahead for busy evenings; food prices are separate from the camping budget.

Culture beyond the campsite

Give Salzburg’s historic streets time beyond a quick photograph. Pair Mirabell’s baroque setting with a slower walk into the old town, using the official tourism information for current visits, concerts and accessible routes. Choose a single major interior visit or performance so that the day retains room for the river and a proper meal.

Practical itinerary and access

Allow roughly 5–7 km between the Nord-Sam area and central sightseeing, depending on your destination. A drive may take about 15–25 minutes and a public-transport journey longer; these are broad estimates, not a checked timetable. Confirm the current bus route and last return before leaving the campsite. Check campsite opening dates directly, especially outside the main season. Keep city visits and any lake or mountain excursion on different days.

Bring waterproof clothing, suitable walking shoes, water, warm bedding, a torch and an offline route map. Check weather and local notices before a longer outing. Use designated waste and wastewater facilities, respect quiet hours and follow current fire restrictions.
