Southern Moldova camping brings together the Lower Prut wetlands, village food traditions and a possible cultural extension into Gagauzia. A practical approach is to reserve a base around Slobozia Mare or Văleni, arrange nature visits locally and leave a separate day for Congaz.
Nature: Lake Beleu and the Lower Prut
Lake Beleu, near Slobozia Mare, is part of the Lower Prut UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Moldova Travel highlights birdwatching and boat experiences here. Wildlife sightings depend on season and conditions, so ask a local guide what is realistic for your dates rather than booking around a guaranteed pelican encounter.
The Lunca Prutului local destination website also identifies the Colinele de Aur landscape near Văleni and Lake Manta as places to explore. Ask which paths are open and suitable for your group. Reserve access, boating and overnight stays are separate arrangements; a campsite booking does not automatically authorize access to every wetland area.
Paid camping with published prices
Potcoava Verde, at 8 Luceafărul Street in Slobozia Mare, lists camping with your own tent at 200 MDL per day and camping with tent rental at 300 MDL per day. These are published advertised amounts checked on 17 October 2026. The listing does not clearly define every occupancy or overnight inclusion, so request your complete price and the arrival/departure times before booking.
The property describes a kitchen and grill area, an outside WC and summer shower, and a viewpoint toward the reserve. Ask which facilities apply to tent bookings and whether the shower operates on your dates. Cabins are also listed as an alternative.
Acceptance of caravans and motorhomes, hookups and wastewater disposal were not verified. Drivers should send vehicle dimensions and obtain an explicit overnight acceptance. Do not infer a serviced vehicle pitch from ordinary parking.
Free camping, permissions and stay limits
No free site with verified authorization and stay-limit terms was established for this guide. Lunca Prutului advises tent travellers to contact the Lower Prut reserve for a suitable overnight location and publishes the enquiry number +373 62 122 295. Ask for the exact place, required permission, maximum stay, charges and facilities. This contact recommendation does not mean that camping inside protected habitat is freely available.
Use an established paid base if you cannot obtain clear permission. Keep cooking to the location and equipment approved by your host, and take all rubbish away from the wetlands.
Restaurants and local food
In Văleni, La Gura Cuptorului combines a bread museum with traditional food experiences. Arrange the visit and meal in advance. Eco-Village Văleni is another local enquiry for food and accommodation; confirm whether a meal can be booked independently of a stay.
For Gagauz cuisine, Gagauz Sofrası in Congaz advertises a traditional restaurant, ethnographic museum, guest accommodation and culinary workshops. Treat Congaz as an extension requiring its own travel time, not as a restaurant next to a Lower Prut tent pitch.
Museums and cultural stops
Pair a nature morning with Văleni’s bread traditions, or enquire about the history and ethnography museum in Slobozia Mare through the local destination website. In Congaz, leave enough time for the ethnographic visit as well as lunch. Ask which activities need a guide or a minimum group.
Distances, season and equipment
Lunca Prutului describes access from Chișinău as roughly 200 km and about three hours by car, depending on your final village. Once booked, ask Potcoava Verde for the exact distance to your boat launch or walking start. Shoreline access and water levels can affect which launch is used, making a fixed campsite-to-lake travel time unreliable.
Suggested plan: arrive on day one, arrange a guided wetland outing on day two, then visit a village food or craft experience. Add Congaz on a separate day. For birdwatching, discuss spring or autumn opportunities with a guide; for any season, check weather and access immediately before departure.
Bring binoculars, insect repellent, a sun hat, drinking water, walking shoes and rainwear. Use a properly fitted life jacket on boat trips and follow the operator’s instructions. Continue north using our Orheiul Vechi guide or return via Chișinău and Codrii.
Research checked 17 October 2026. Published prices are not a booking confirmation; obtain the current total and permission terms.
