Malta Camping Guide: Where to Camp in Malta, Gozo & Comino

Malta camping can combine a managed coastal pitch, day trips to Gozo and a carefully planned Comino visit. The key is to choose your overnight base before booking boats or building a long walking itinerary. This directory links our three island guides and distinguishes verified facilities from arrangements that still need local confirmation.

Choose your island guide

These guides are organized geographically around Malta, Gozo and Comino. Each covers nature, camping arrangements, cultural visits, dining and practical transport planning.

Malta Island

A managed camping base at Għajn Tuffieħa, published charges, coastal outings and Valletta’s heritage.

Gozo

Dwejra, Ramla Bay, walking routes and Cittadella culture, with honest overnight-planning limitations.

Comino

Tal-Ful guidance, Blue Lagoon access, island walks and the checks needed before an overnight stay.

Malta camping: compare the overnight options

Island Planning position Before committing
Malta Managed public camping at Għajn Tuffieħa verified from the operator Reserve a plot and confirm VAT, party size, extras and vehicle category
Gozo No current authorized local pitch and tariff verified for this series Confirm a local operator’s status or plan a day trip from a booked Malta base
Comino Tal-Ful identified by ERA as the designated area Confirm current availability, access procedure, fee and facilities with ERA

A paid camping base and budget

Għajn Tuffieħa Scout Campsite is the managed base used in these itineraries. The operator’s Standard Prices separate plot, person and vehicle charges, with VAT added. Our Malta island article gives the checked breakdown and an example tent budget.

Build your total from the campsite quote, parking, transport, food, attraction tickets and any equipment hire. Normal utility use is different from unlimited consumption. Check the current terms for check-in, length of stay and rules, and resolve any difference between the FAQ and tariff wording with the operator.

Free camping and permits

No guaranteed authorized free camping option was verified for this directory. In particular, Tal-Ful’s current official fee was not confirmed. Avoid treating old trip reports, a public beach or a parking pin as permission to stay overnight.

For proposed sites on Malta or Gozo, contact the relevant council and check the government Local Permits System. Comino has separate ERA guidance. Obtain the requirements for your exact location and dates rather than assuming one island’s arrangements apply everywhere.

Nature and cultural days

On Malta island, pair beach time near Għajn Tuffieħa with a separate western-coast or Valletta day. The National Museum of Archaeology provides context for the islands’ prehistoric sites.

On Gozo, choose between Dwejra’s coastal formations, Ramla’s red sand and a walking itinerary before adding Victoria’s museums. Comino offers limestone paths, bays and Santa Marija Tower; its small size does not remove the need for water, sun protection and transport planning.

Where to eat

The island guides link Singita Miracle Beach at Għajn Tuffieħa for Mediterranean dining, The Cliffs at Dingli for a western-coast meal, and Ta’ Rikardu in Victoria for traditional Maltese food. Check each venue’s current menu and hours. None is a dependable food supply while camping on Comino.

Inter-island transport

Use Gozo Channel’s schedule for the Ċirkewwa–Mġarr crossing. Allow time for the journey to the harbour, queues and travel after landing; the sea crossing alone is not the door-to-door trip.

For a visit within Blue Lagoon’s managed area, read the official access FAQ and obtain any required free timed pass. Boats are paid separately. Lagoon entry, boat transport and overnight camping are three separate arrangements.

A suggested five-day plan

  1. Arrival: check into the reserved Malta pitch and settle your equipment.
  2. Northwest coast: choose a beach and manageable walk near the base.
  3. Culture: plan Valletta or the archaeological parks, allowing realistic transfer time.
  4. Gozo: combine one coast with one cultural stop and a confirmed return connection.
  5. Comino: choose a weather-suitable day visit. Add an overnight stay only after confirming Tal-Ful arrangements.

Season and essential equipment

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for walking. Summer requires early starts and more water; winter plans need flexibility for wind, rain and boat disruption. Bring sturdy shoes, sun protection, a waterproof layer, offline maps, a power bank and a light. Choose an anchored tent setup suited to exposed weather and follow site-specific cooking rules.
