Comino Camping Guide: Tal-Ful, Blue Lagoon & Island Walks

Comino camping requires more preparation than a simple Blue Lagoon excursion. Tal-Ful is the designated camping area identified by Malta’s environmental authority, but a successful trip also depends on current access arrangements, equipment rules, water supplies and a confirmed boat connection.

Where camping is designated

ERA’s camping guidance identifies Tal-Ful and states that camping elsewhere on Comino requires the authority’s authorization. Older descriptions of camping at Santa Marija Bay should not be treated as current permission.

Before taking overnight equipment across, ask ERA about present opening, access, any application requirement, capacity and temporary restrictions. A published designation does not guarantee that a place will be available on your arrival date.

Comino camping rules and stay limits

The site rules published in Government Notice 1416 of 26 October 2021, linked by ERA, limit tents and equipment to 30 days. They prohibit vehicle access and parking, physical alteration of the site, campfires and charcoal. Gas cooking is subject to detailed limits and separation requirements. Read the full rules and ask ERA about subsequent changes before travel.

Use a compact, portable tent setup rather than planning structures or a motorhome stay. Do not carry fuel without checking both the campsite rules and your boat operator’s carriage restrictions.

Is Tal-Ful free?

A current official camping fee, booking charge or explicit free-of-charge tariff was not verified from the pages checked. This guide therefore does not advertise a guaranteed free stay. Confirm the camping cost and access procedure directly before making transport plans.

The free Blue Lagoon landing pass is a different arrangement. It is not proof of a free campsite, an overnight reservation or authorization to pitch a tent beside the lagoon.

Blue Lagoon access and nature

The official Blue Lagoon access FAQ requires a free timed QR pass for a visit within the managed lagoon area, subject to its stated exemptions. Ferry transport is booked and paid separately. Check how the pass applies to your landing and route if you intend to continue to another part of Comino.

Beyond Blue Lagoon, Visit Gozo’s Comino guide highlights Santa Marija Bay, limestone scenery and paths across the island. Choose a walking route suited to the heat and your load. Beach access does not establish camping rights, and inviting water can be unsafe in wind, swell or heavy boat traffic.

Culture: Santa Marija Tower

Santa Marija Tower is a useful cultural landmark to include in an island walk. Din l-Art Ħelwa explains its role in the islands’ defensive and communication system. Confirm current visitor access with the heritage organization; an exterior visit does not guarantee that the tower will be open.

No on-island museum with a verified current opening schedule is included here. For a fuller museum day, use the Victoria and Cittadella options in our Gozo guide.

Food and water planning

Do not build an overnight plan around seasonal kiosks. Carry adequate drinking water and food for the stay and a possible transport delay, after checking what your boat permits you to carry. Confirm current toilet, wash-water and waste arrangements rather than assuming serviced-pitch facilities.

For a meal after returning to Gozo, Ta’ Rikardu on Triq il-Fosos in Victoria offers traditional Maltese food. If returning to the Malta camping base, Singita Miracle Beach at Għajn Tuffieħa is a Mediterranean dining option. Both require additional travel and are outside Comino; check service hours.

A managed paid alternative

If current Tal-Ful access cannot be confirmed, consider a day visit and a reserved pitch at Għajn Tuffieħa Scout Campsite on Malta. The operator’s tariff is published online; see our Malta island guide for plot, person and vehicle charges. This is an inter-island alternative, not a nearby walk from Tal-Ful.

Transport, walking time and season

Arrange your exact departure point, landing, return service and luggage allowance directly with a licensed operator. Visit Gozo describes Mġarr–Comino trips as around 15 minutes, but sea conditions and the selected service change the journey. Add time for check-in and the walk from your actual landing to Tal-Ful; obtain that route before carrying a heavy pack.

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for walking, subject to wind and sea conditions. Summer means strong sun, limited shade and extra water needs. Winter plans need a reliable transport alternative. Pack sturdy shoes, sun protection, a weather layer, a light, power bank and rubbish bags.

For a first visit, a day trip is often easier to organize: confirm transport, reserve any required lagoon slot, choose a short walk and return to your booked base. Only add an overnight stay once the camping arrangements are clear.

Return to the Malta camping directory to compare all three islands.
