Gozo camping needs an overnight plan before you set off for its beaches and coastal walks. This guide focuses on the island’s outdoor and cultural highlights, explains what could be verified about camping, and offers a practical fallback from a managed campsite on Malta.
Camping on Gozo: what is confirmed?
A currently authorized public tent campsite on Gozo, together with a current official pitch tariff, was not verified from the sources checked for this article. That is a research limitation, not a claim that no camping operation exists. Treat older campsite listings as leads to investigate, rather than confirmed places to arrive without booking.
Before paying an operator, ask for the exact site address, current authorization, dates, services, full price and vehicle restrictions. For a proposed private-land stay, establish the owner’s permission and any council or environmental requirements. A beach, saltpan, trailhead or car park is not evidence of permission.
Free camping and a paid fallback
No authorized free tent or motorhome overnight site on Gozo has been verified for this itinerary. Do not assume that a quiet stretch of coast is available for camping.
One verifiable alternative is to reserve Għajn Tuffieħa Scout Campsite on Malta island, then visit Gozo by ferry. It is on another island and should be budgeted as a substantial day trip. Its published price list starts with a €10 small plot plus €7 per person per night, before VAT and extras. See our Malta island camping guide for the fuller price breakdown and vehicle arrangements.
Nature: Dwejra and Ramla Bay
Dwejra is a rewarding landscape day, with limestone coastal formations, the Inland Sea and views toward Fungus Rock. The former Azure Window collapsed in 2017, so older photographs do not show today’s coastline. Stay clear of wave-washed edges and assess conditions before approaching the water.
Ramla Bay offers red sand and an important protected dune habitat. Use established access routes and keep off the dunes. Choose swimming only when conditions and local advice are suitable; a scenic bay is not automatically safe in wind or swell.
These two areas deserve separate time. For a relaxed day trip, choose one coast and combine it with a short cultural stop rather than trying to cover every bay.
Walking routes
The official Visit Gozo hiking pages are a useful place to select a route that fits your ability. The Ramla Walk leaflet describes an 8 km route from Marsalforn to Ramla through Xagħra. Treat the older leaflet as a planning aid and check current access and transport before leaving.
Carry enough drinking water, a sunhat, sturdy footwear and an offline map. Start early in hot weather and allow for the slower pace of uneven ground. Do not enter agricultural plots or climb rubble walls to shorten a route.
Museums and cultural stops
Victoria’s Cittadella provides a compact cultural focus. The official museum directory lists the Museum of Archaeology, Gozo Nature Museum, Old Prison and Cittadella Visitors’ Centre, along with other options. Choose one or two and verify current openings before building your day around them.
The Ġgantija temples at Xagħra offer another archaeological visit. Check the current operator listing for admission and access. Museum visits are useful alternatives when weather makes an exposed coastal walk less attractive.
Where to eat
Ta’ Rikardu, Triq il-Fosos, Victoria, is listed as a traditional Maltese restaurant. It fits a Cittadella visit rather than a beach picnic. Confirm service hours, availability and the current menu directly; no meal price is guaranteed here.
For a walking day, buy food before leaving town and carry your rubbish back. Do not depend on a seasonal beach stall being open or on finding a drinking-water refill along every route.
Ferry, distances and timing
Visit Gozo describes the Ċirkewwa–Mġarr ferry crossing as about 25 minutes, with a season-dependent timetable. Gozo Channel lists the standard passenger fare at €4.65; vehicle fares and eligibility categories differ. Check the fare applicable to your journey and the ticket arrangements before boarding.
From Għajn Tuffieħa, allow approximately 30–45 minutes by car to Ċirkewwa, plus waiting, embarkation and the crossing. On Gozo, allow roughly 20–35 minutes from Mġarr toward Victoria and around 30–45 minutes toward Dwejra. These are broad planning estimates; buses, queues and traffic can lengthen the trip considerably.
Check the final ferry and onward transport before starting your walk. If you want long walks over several days, arrange verified accommodation on Gozo instead of relying on repeated late returns.
Season and trip planning
Spring and autumn can suit walking; summer calls for early starts and extra water. Winter trips need wind, rain and ferry flexibility. Select the coast and route for the day’s conditions rather than following a rigid itinerary.
