Vanuatu Camping Guide: All Six Provinces, Island Stays and Access Checks

This Vanuatu camping guide connects introductory articles for all six provinces, with selected camping enquiries, supplied accommodation, nature, culture and food planning. The directory distinguishes an own-tent pitch from a bungalow, dormitory or furnished tent. It is not a complete list of every village or campground.

Vanuatu camping: six provinces

The Vanuatu Tourism Office identifies Torba, Sanma, Penama, Malampa, Shefa and Tafea. Each linked article covers selected places within its province and provides a return link. Multiple islands within a province still need separate transport plans.

Read the UK Vanuatu advisory and its transport and safety guidance. The latter notes continuing restricted areas after the December 2024 earthquake and the possibility of short-notice changes to outer-island flights and boat services. Reconfirm the actual route, property and activity with the host.

Use the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department for current warnings and forecasts, and its volcano bulletins and alert summary before any volcanic excursion. During this research the summary showed Level 3 for Ambrym and Ambae, and Level 2 for Yasur and Mount Garet. These dated observations are not future access guarantees or permission to enter an exclusion zone.

A tourism page describing a trek or campsite does not override the responsible authority’s current restrictions. Confirm the latest bulletin, approved route, local permissions and guide before departure. Do not approach a crater on the assumption that a particular alert number means unrestricted access.

What the accommodation sources establish

The provincial articles identify tourism-listed camping at Victor’s on Gaua, Lonnoc and Pui on Santo, Le Life on Efate and Volcano Haven on Tanna. Each requires confirmation of the actual product, availability and facilities. Some supply sleeping structures, while others advertise room and camping options separately.

Penama and Malampa articles also provide supplied-bungalow enquiries with published reference rates. Those are not relabelled as independent tent prices. A place described as a camp, eco-retreat or glamping product may not accept an unreserved own-tent stay.

Prices, conflicts and dated promotions

The Shefa article explains conflicting units on two Le Life pages: a tent-for-two starting amount and a per-person nightly amount. Obtain a written quote for the actual product instead of calculating a bill from inconsistent pages. Shared facilities, equipment hire and minimum-night conditions need explicit clarification.

Other numeric examples specify whether they are room, meal or transfer prices, and require a fresh quote where no current validity is provided. Old newsletters and expired festival dates are not treated as current availability. No national camping price or complete free-camping network is claimed.

Permission and local culture

Obtain express landowner and host permission for the exact overnight location. A beach entrance, cultural welcome or activity ticket is not an unrestricted camping permit. Ask about stay limits and conduct rules and use approved waste arrangements.

Kastom events and community visits need appropriate local arrangements. Ask before photography or entering private and sacred places. The Penama guide explicitly distinguishes the already completed 2026 land-diving event dates from any future booking; a ceremony is not an on-demand performance.

Food and supplies

Some selected properties list restaurants, while others offer hosted meals or only a potential cooking space. Confirm the actual menu, dietary requirements, drinking water, opening and inclusion in the booking. Bungalow breakfast is not automatically included in a separate camping product.

Take the supplies agreed with the host, particularly for remote islands and multi-stage transfers. Do not assume groceries, fuel, batteries or charging will be available at the final overnight location.

Vehicles, seasons and distances

The series does not infer a serviced motorhome pitch from an ordinary road or resort parking area. Check vehicle access, dimensions and overnight acceptance independently. Boat and small-aircraft baggage limits can affect tent and cooking-equipment plans.

Use the actual airport, landing, trailhead and property as separate route points. Indicative travel times exclude waiting, connections, road deterioration and weather disruption. Allow spare days and confirm the return journey before leaving a main hub.

Choose dates using current local forecasts and operating conditions for the activity, rather than assuming a general holiday season opens every route. Pack appropriate footwear, waterproof protection, warm or sun layers, lighting and the supplies required by the selected stay.

Confirm through the appropriate local office

The Tourism Office’s travel-centre directory identifies Port Vila, Santo, Malekula and Tanna branches and their service areas. Use the relevant office and the actual operator to resolve island-specific access, booking and current service questions.

Recheck source pages near departure. A confirmed reservation still needs a workable transport and communication plan, present access information and an agreed alternative if conditions change.
