This Northwest Iceland camping guide focuses on a Skagafjörður stay around Varmahlíð, with gentle woodland walks and turf-house heritage. Use it as a local itinerary within Northwest Iceland / Norðurland vestra, with time to adapt to Iceland’s weather. Sources and published tariffs checked on 16 October 2026. Prices are Icelandic krónur (ISK); the tariff year and limitations are stated below.
Northwest Iceland camping guide: nature and walks
Follow marked paths in Reykjarhóll woodland above Varmahlíð. A viewpoint path offers a local walking objective without requiring a long detour from Route 1. Choose a shorter circuit when wind, rain or visibility deteriorates. Keep gates as you find them and avoid entering farmland without permission.
Established camping and checked prices
Varmahlíð Camping Ground is an established woodland campsite with the swimming pool within walking distance. The operator’s 2026 tariff lists ISK 2,500 per person on the first night, ISK 2,200 on additional nights, electricity ISK 1,300 daily and lodging tax ISK 400 per unit per night. Children aged 12 and younger stay free. Two adults in one unit therefore total ISK 5,400 on the first night without power, or ISK 6,700 with power. Laundry and dryer are ISK 750 each. Confirm the total, touring season and facilities for your tent, car or motorhome. Do not assume swimming-pool admission is included.
Confirm the final charge for your dates, party and equipment. Ask about pitch access, drinking water, wastewater disposal, showers and cancellation terms. A published price does not guarantee availability, and seasonal services can change.
Free authorized camping nearby
No specific free overnight site has been verified for this itinerary. Use the established campsite when permission is unclear. Tent access rules, protected-area restrictions and landowner conditions must be checked for the exact location; they do not provide general permission for overnight camping vehicles. See our national guide for the official source and practical distinctions.
Restaurant and local food
For a town outing, Kaffi Krókur Sportbar og grill in Sauðárkrókur serves casual options including burgers and small pizzas. This is a separate excursion rather than an on-site restaurant; check kitchen hours before driving there.
Culture beyond the campsite
Glaumbær’s museum exhibitions introduce life in Icelandic turf houses. The protected farmhouse is a particularly useful complement to the landscape around Skagafjörður. Check opening and admission, and use designated visitor access to protect the buildings.
Season, access and equipment
Summer is the easiest planning window; confirm shoulder-season camping directly. Glaumbær is roughly 8–10 km north of Varmahlíð, around 10–15 minutes by car. Sauðárkrókur is approximately 25 km away, around 25–30 minutes. These are planning estimates in normal conditions. Allow a full day to combine walking, the museum and food rather than adding distant detours. Pack waterproof layers, warm bedding and shoes suited to wet paths.
Pack waterproof and windproof clothing, insulated bedding, a suitable sleeping mat, sturdy shoes and offline maps. Check SafeTravel, the Icelandic Met Office and official road information before setting out. Never use a stove or barbecue inside a tent, and leave fragile moss and vegetation undisturbed.
