This Iceland camping guide connects eight regional itineraries, each built around an established campsite, a manageable nature outing, a named food stop and local culture. Start with the area that fits your arrival point, season and equipment. Give weather changes space in your schedule rather than making every night depend on a long drive. Sources and published tariffs were checked on 16 October 2026.
Iceland camping guide: explore eight regions
The directory follows eight familiar regional areas. Tourism websites sometimes combine the two northern areas as North Iceland, while the Highlands are a landscape crossing regional boundaries. They are not a ninth overnight itinerary in this series. These guides provide local bases, rather than an exhaustive list of every campsite or attraction in each region.
Reykjavík and the Capital Region
Laugardalur gardens, an urban camping base and sculpture.
Reykjanes / Southern Peninsula
Keflavík airport-area camping, coastal walks and cultural exhibitions.
West Iceland / Vesturland
Húsafell woodland, Hraunfossar waterfalls and Reykholt heritage.
Westfjords / Vestfirðir
Norðurfjörður and a slower journey along the Strandir coast.
Northwest Iceland / Norðurland vestra
Varmahlíð woodland and the turf-house museum at Glaumbær.
Northeast Iceland / Norðurland eystra
Akureyri, Kjarnaskógur forest, botanical gardens and art.
East Iceland / Austurland
Egilsstaðir, Hallormsstaður forest and regional heritage.
South Iceland / Suðurland
Selfoss, river scenery, local food and Eyrarbakki history.
Established campsites and tariff evidence
All amounts in this Iceland series are Icelandic krónur (ISK). Open a regional guide for the named campsite’s rates and source. Reykjavík, Varmahlíð, Hamrar, Egilsstaðir and Gesthús publish lists labelled 2026. Húsafell’s live list is undated. Happy Campsite’s current FAQ and its older facilities article need a dated booking quotation. Urðartindur’s available operator list is explicitly 2025 and is presented only as a historical reference.
Check the number of guests included, the unit charge, lodging tax and power before comparing prices. A fee per adult is not the total for a couple, and an electricity connection is not necessarily part of the camping charge. Laundry, showers, hot tubs and other services may be separate. Confirm the final amount in writing, along with the pitch category, facilities and cancellation conditions.
Use established sites for tents, caravans or motorhomes according to the operator’s current instructions. Some take reservations, while others require payment on arrival. Check late-arrival arrangements before setting off. Year-round opening can mean a limited winter parking area rather than access to all summer grass pitches.
Free authorized camping: tents and vehicles differ
The official camping guidance describes conditional access for traditional tents. Along public routes in inhabited areas, one night on uncultivated land may be allowed when no campsite is nearby and access has not been restricted. Permission is required near homes or farms, on cultivated land, for longer stays or for more than three tents. Other land and protected areas have additional conditions.
That tent access does not establish general overnight permission for caravans, tent trailers or campervans. Outside organised campsites or urban areas, the official guidance requires landowner or rightholder permission for these units; urban parking also has local rules. Use an authorised campsite as the practical default. No specific free overnight location has been verified for our eight itineraries.
Protected-area restrictions can override general access. Check the exact location with the ranger or land manager. Do not infer permission from a parking space, an old travel blog or another vehicle already staying there. Take all rubbish away and use proper wastewater facilities.
National parks and longer nature outings
For a separate national-park stay, consult Þingvellir’s official camping information. Its campsite is at Leirar, with facilities and access conditions to check directly. In southeast Iceland, Skaftafell offers walking routes including Svartifoss and glacier viewpoints. Use the park’s campground information and current official tariff for a separate booking.
Keep glacier, cave and remote Highland activities separate from a simple lowland camping itinerary. A glacier viewpoint is not permission to walk onto the ice. Choose an appropriate professional operator for activities requiring specialist equipment and knowledge.
Food and culture along the route
The regional guides pair nearby food and cultural stops: Café Flóra with Laugardalur sculpture; Kaffi Duus with exhibitions in Keflavík; Húsafell dining with Reykholt; Norðurfjörður Café with local Strandir culture; and Glaumbær with a Skagafjörður outing. Akureyri, Egilsstaðir and Selfoss offer town meals and museums or historic buildings. Check current menus, opening and reservations independently of your camping stay.
Season, roads and equipment
June–August is the simplest starting window for tent itineraries, but even summer brings cold, wind and rain. Follow SafeTravel’s camping advice: use a strong tent suitable for the conditions and check all poles, pegs and guylines before departure. Pack insulated bedding and a sleeping mat, warm layers, waterproof outerwear, sturdy shoes, offline maps and a headtorch when nights are dark. Never cook inside a tent.
Before each journey, check SafeTravel alerts, Met Office forecasts and official road conditions. Distances and times in the regional guides are estimates for normal conditions, not winter promises. Allow rest after a flight and keep an indoor alternative for severe weather.
Use official Highland driving advice before considering F-roads. Confirm vehicle capability, rental permission, road opening and river conditions; a 4×4 does not make every route appropriate. For Reykjanes, consult current volcanic-area access advice. Respect closures and stay off recent lava. Plan fewer stops well and leave room to change direction.
