Cyprus Camping Guide: Explore All Six Districts

Cyprus camping needs a little more checking than an old campsite map suggests. Coastal pitches, forest facilities and prepared accommodation have different booking arrangements, and several familiar sites have been affected by closures or redevelopment. Choose confirmed accommodation first, then build a route around it.

Checked October 16, 2026. This series covers six districts with focused starting itineraries, not an exhaustive list of every settlement or campsite. Reconfirm operation, prices and access for your travel dates.

Cyprus camping guides by district

The Republic of Cyprus’s administrative structure identifies six districts. The practical travel situation differs across the island: the Kyrenia guide concerns the Turkish Cypriot-administered north, while our Famagusta guide focuses on Ayia Napa, Protaras and Cape Greco in the government-controlled area. Check the scope of each guide before choosing a base.

Paphos

Where to begin your camping trip

For a western coastal itinerary, our Paphos guide covers Aphrodite Family Eco Camping near the Baths of Aphrodite and explains its published 2026 tariff. For a southeastern road base, investigate Governor’s Beach Kalymnos through Limassol Tourism’s camping information and confirm current availability directly.

A listing is a starting point, not a live reservation. Specify whether you need space for your own tent, a caravan or a motorhome, or want prepared accommodation. Ask about electricity, fresh water, waste disposal, vehicle size and late arrival separately. Do not infer all facilities from the word “camping”.

Closures: do not rely on an old brochure

The June 2026 government announcement describes Platania as closed. Reporting on August 11, 2026 also described Troodos, Kambi tou Kalogyrou and Polis Chrysochous as unavailable at that time. Reopening was not verified during this check, so these guides do not offer them as confirmed available bases.

Polis municipal camping should not be confused with Aphrodite’s separate private operation. Likewise, a picnic area or forestry guesthouse does not automatically provide a touring pitch. If a legal overnight place cannot be confirmed, book another form of accommodation and make day visits to the landscape you want to explore.

Budgeting and booking

Ask for the complete cost for all occupants, equipment, car parking, electricity and compulsory charges. Check minimum stays, deposits, cancellation terms and seasonal bands. The Paphos article includes a worked example from a dated operator tariff; where a suitable current rate was not verified, the district guides say so.

Driving estimates in the articles are broad planning ranges, not measured live journeys. Check the route from your actual accommodation and allow for parking, unfamiliar roads and breaks. A distant camping base may cost less per night while adding considerable travel time.

Free camping and forest fire rules

No authorised free overnight campsite was verified for the itineraries in this series. The Department of Forests fire-safety guidance limits forest camping to camping sites. Picnic tables, a shoreline car park or an online camping marker do not establish permission for an overnight stay.

Follow current local fire instructions and ask the operator which cooking arrangements are allowed. The Forestry Department’s May 2026 notice explains restrictions on lighting fires in and near state forests and the limited exceptions for designated food-preparation areas. The presence of a grill does not override a newer site closure or restriction.

Nature, food and cultural days

Build the trip around a few distinct outings: Akamas and Paphos archaeology in the west; the Limassol coast; Athalassa and a museum day in Nicosia; Larnaca’s wetland and archaeology; Cape Greco near Ayia Napa; or conservation-led Alagadi visits and Kyrenia’s harbour heritage in the north. The district articles provide the relevant source links and food suggestions.

Wetland birds, turtle activities and mountain walks follow different seasonal patterns. Check the actual conditions rather than choosing one “best month” for everything. Pack water, sun protection, comfortable footwear, a first-aid kit and layers appropriate to your specific route. Protected beaches are wildlife habitats, not substitute campgrounds.

Crossings and vehicle cover

If travelling between the government-controlled area and the Turkish Cypriot-administered north, use designated crossing points and check documentation for your nationality. Confirm rental permission and insurance before taking a vehicle across. Consult Canadian government travel advice and U.S. State Department guidance, then verify the requirements that apply to your own trip. A campsite booking does not resolve crossing formalities.

Start with the six district cards above, confirm your overnight base and keep your Cyprus camping itinerary within a realistic daily travel budget.
