Zemgale Camping Guide: Palace Gardens and Bauska Heritage

Zemgale camping offers a slower journey through southern Latvia, pairing open countryside with palace gardens and historic Bauska. A small camping base near the Riga–Bauska corridor keeps the driving manageable.

Start with the Latvia camping guide and destination directory to connect this stop with the rest of your journey.

Zemgale camping: nature and outdoor time

Make the gardens of Rundāle Palace your main landscaped outdoor visit. Combine garden paths with a separate walk around the river setting of Bauska Castle. These are managed heritage landscapes: check garden admission and keep camping equipment at your booked site.

Established campsite and published rates

Labirinti, “Bērziņi”, Zorģi, Iecava parish, lists camping from 1 April to 31 October. Its undated price page charges tents at €5 per person per night and electricity at €5: two adults are €10, or €15 with power. A caravan with two people is €25; extra people are €5 each. Ask whether electricity is included in the caravan quotation. The site specifies cash payment. Confirm facilities, dates and any separate activity-park admission when booking.

Free camping and permission

No specific free overnight site was verified for this itinerary. Use the established campsite above, or obtain permission for a particular alternative. A picnic area, beach access point or car park is not evidence that overnight camping is permitted. Check the national guide for official forest guidance and local restrictions.

Culture and local heritage

Plan time for Bauska Castle and Rundāle Palace on separate half-days. Their Renaissance and Baroque settings give this region a different character from Latvia’s coastal towns. Check current exhibitions and tickets directly rather than assuming one combined pass.

Where to eat

Mūza, the restaurant at Rija Bauska Hotel on Slimnīcas iela 7 in Bauska, offers a convenient sit-down meal stop while visiting town. Check service times and reserve if travelling with a group.

Practical Zemgale camping information

Labirinti is about 48 km from Riga on the Via Baltica corridor. Allow around one hour from central Riga as a broad planning estimate, longer in traffic. Rundāle’s operator places the palace 12 km from Bauska, so allow an additional local transfer rather than walking between them. Carry cash for the campsite, rain protection, comfortable garden-walking shoes and mosquito repellent. A car is useful for linking countryside stops.

A relaxed two-night plan

Arrive with time to check in and settle your pitch in daylight. Spend the first evening close to camp, then use the full day for gardens and palaces. Keep a weather alternative and avoid planning a long drive after an ambitious walk. Before departure, dispose of waste at the campsite’s designated facilities and leave your pitch clean.
