Upper East Ghana camping planning begins with current safety advice and a clearly confirmed host. Bolgatanga, Navrongo and the region’s craft and heritage communities offer different points of interest, but a historic attraction listing does not establish that an onward route or overnight location is suitable today.
Current travel advice
As checked in October 2026, FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Bawku Municipality and reports attacks on specific approach roads in the wider north. Do not use this guide to plan a leisure camping trip to Bawku; consult the live advisory before deciding on any regional route.
Towns and route anchors
Bolgatanga, Navrongo, Paga, Sirigu and Tongo are the reference points used in this guide. They help you discuss the route with a host or driver; they are not a list of verified campsites.
Bolgatanga and craft traditions
The tourism authority identifies Bolgatanga with baskets, cloth, jewellery and other handicrafts. Arrange a visit with makers who welcome guests and agree charges for demonstrations. A local guide can help interpret the work without turning every interaction into a purchase. Confirm any museum visit independently rather than assuming a permanent collection is open daily.
Navrongo, Sirigu and Tongo
Navrongo church, Sirigu art and pottery and the Tongo-Tenzug area are regional cultural references. Choose a locally appropriate, currently accessible visit and check community or religious protocols. Sacred sites may have entry conditions that differ from a conventional museum. Ask before photographing people and accept that some places or ceremonies may not be open to visitors.
Paga camping evidence and its limits
The tourism authority’s Paga page mentions camping and locally arranged accommodation. Treat that as an enquiry lead requiring reconfirmation of the actual pitch, sanitation, equipment and current access. It does not establish a serviced public campground, present availability or a safe regional route. Keep a confirmed room alternative and observe wildlife without touching or feeding crocodiles.
Food and responsible decisions
Ask your host about a suitable arrival time and meal arrangements before leaving your previous base. No specific restaurant opening schedule or fixed campsite price is verified here. Upper East Ghana camping should remain conditional on current advice, local consent and a reliable booking. If those checks cannot be completed, postpone the trip instead of improvising a riverside or village overnight stop.
Booking and packing checklist
Before paying, request the exact sleeping arrangement, total charge for your dates, cancellation conditions and arrival point. Ask about shade, toilets, washing facilities, drinking water, meals and charging. For a tent stay, establish whether bedding is supplied and whether your own equipment is permitted. Keep a written confirmation and the host’s contact available offline.
Pack according to the confirmed activity: comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, insect protection, a torch and a charged power bank are useful items to discuss with your host. Carry out rubbish and follow local rules on fires, cooking and access. A beach, forest or village visit never substitutes for permission to stay overnight.
