Sweden Camping Guide: All 21 Counties, Nature & Culture

This Sweden camping guide connects all 21 counties through practical local itineraries. Choose a lakeside base, a coastal stay or a mountain-area campsite, then add nearby walks, food and culture. Each county guide names an established campsite and links to published price information. Sources and tariffs were checked on 16 October 2026; many quoted rates describe the completed 2026 summer season, not confirmed availability for a future trip.

Sweden camping guide: choose your county

Sweden has 21 counties. This directory follows those administrative areas rather than historic provinces. Each card opens a complete guide with a campsite, nature, food, culture and practical planning notes.

Nature: build a trip around one landscape

For a short holiday, choose one region and leave time for weather changes. Southern coastlines suit beach walks and village visits; the central lake regions offer woodland and waterside stays. Hemavan provides a mountain-area base, while Piteå offers a northern riverside itinerary. County guides describe selected local bases rather than every attraction within a county.

Follow marked routes, avoid fragile dunes and wetlands, and ask locally about water conditions before swimming or paddling. A short distance can still involve steep, rocky or exposed ground. Match your equipment and route to the forecast, snow cover and daylight.

Established campsites and checked prices

All prices are Swedish kronor (SEK). The county articles identify the relevant year, season and pitch category, with known supplements such as electricity, showers, extra people and booking fees. A tent rate, motorhome stopover and full camping pitch are different products. Confirm the total for your own party, equipment and dates before booking.

For example, the regional guides include Lövhult’s municipal campsite, Ottenby on Öland, Läckö near Lake Vänern and Sofielund near Sala. Use their linked operator tariffs in the individual guides to check current offers. Rates may be seasonal, preliminary or subject to special-event minimum stays. A price table alone does not prove that a campsite or its facilities operate throughout winter.

Tents, free camping and authorized access

Sweden’s Environmental Protection Agency describes short tent stays of a night or two under the right of public access, with consideration for residents and the land. Avoid cultivated land, grazing areas and private residential surroundings. Larger groups need landowner permission. Protected areas and municipal recreation spaces can impose additional restrictions: check their own rules and signs.

This is not a directory of verified free pitches. County articles say explicitly when no specific free overnight site has been verified. Tiveden has designated tent areas and strict overnight hours, described in the Örebro guide; do not assume unrestricted camping throughout a national park.

Motorhomes, caravans and rooftop tents

The right of public access does not cover motor vehicles. Do not drive or park on natural ground such as beaches, forests or meadows. Rest-area parking is generally limited to 24 hours on weekdays, with different weekend arrangements, but signs and local conditions govern. A legal parking space does not automatically permit setting out camping furniture or staying indefinitely. Use established campsites or expressly permitted stopovers.

Food and culture between outdoor days

The county guides name restaurants or cafés and give their location and food style where verified. These range from lakeside lunches and Swedish fika to coastal restaurants and Hemavan lunch buffets. Some are daytime cafés rather than full evening restaurants. Check kitchen hours, dietary needs and seasonal closures, and carry arrival-day supplies.

Build in a cultural visit: Läckö Castle, Sala Silver Mine, the Birgit Nilsson Museum, the Bergman Center and Piteå Museum are among the linked options. Museum interiors, tours and outdoor grounds may have different opening arrangements. Book special visits separately from your campsite.

Season, transport and essential equipment

Summer generally offers the broadest combination of camping, food and visitor services. Spring and autumn can bring quieter stays alongside reduced opening and colder nights. Northern and mountain conditions require particular care; confirm snow, daylight, road conditions and heated facilities. Check ferries separately for Gotland and Fårö.

Driving distances in the county guides are broad planning estimates, not live navigation. Verify the safe route and allow for ferries, queues and weather. Pack waterproof layers, suitable bedding, sturdy shoes, a headtorch, offline maps, drinking water and food. Ask each campsite about drinking-water points, electricity connections, wastewater disposal and late arrivals.

Before using any stove, barbecue or fire, check the official fire-ban map and the rules for your exact location. Restrictions change and protected-area rules can be stricter. Use designated waste facilities, take food scraps away and leave the ground undisturbed.
