Réunion Camping Guide: Salazie, Waterfalls & Mountain Nights

Réunion camping combines mountain scenery and Creole villages, but road access and a walking route must be planned separately. Salazie offers an established tent base for shorter outings. A remote cirque or volcanic route needs a different overnight and transport arrangement.

Departments covered by this regional guide

La Réunion, department code 974. Salazie, Cilaos, Mafate, the volcanic southeast and the coast are different trip clusters, each needing its own access plan.

Natural places to visit

Around Hell-Bourg, choose a village-and-forest outing and a suitable waterfall viewpoint. The Voile de la Mariée is a natural highlight on the Salazie approach; confirm the permitted viewpoint rather than improvising a river access.

For longer stages, consider Mafate, Cilaos and Piton de la Fournaise separately. Trail closures and weather can alter the itinerary; a road viewpoint is not equivalent to a high-level mountain walk.

Camping inside the destination

Camping Le Relax at Ilet à Vidot near Hell-Bourg provides managed tent pitches with a shared kitchen and hot showers. Confirm your tent size, dates, parking and arrival instructions. Its listing does not establish full-service caravan or motorhome acceptance.

The national park’s bivouac guidance permits overnight arrangements under conditions, with exceptions including Mare Longue forest, Grand Bassin, Rivière des Remparts and specified cliffs. Check the exact location and any current closure.

Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac

No specifically verified free serviced tent campground was established for this Salazie base. A permitted walking bivouac is a different arrangement: the park says tents or hammocks should be erected before sunset and removed in the morning, with no campfire. Confirm the chosen spot and any applicable charge or permission.

A road car park, picnic structure or popular viewpoint must not be described as unrestricted free overnight camping.

The official tourism Le Relax listing, updated June 29, 2026, displays €12 per adult/night. Two adults would be €24 on that person rate before any other applicable charge. Confirm pitch inclusion, children, tourist tax and booking conditions; the database’s broad date range is not a promise of future pricing.

The kitchen, hot showers and shared sanitary facilities are advertised. Ask about potable water, equipment storage, road access and cancellations. A walk-in lodge or mountain-refuge booking is a separate product with separate rules.

Restaurants, museums and cultural stops

Ti’ Chouchou in Hell-Bourg serves a local village meal, with Creole cooking highlighted in tourism information. Reserve and verify current hours. The Maison Folio gives a cultural complement through a historic Creole house and garden.

Choose culture after a shorter walk and leave time for mountain-road travel. Saint-Denis or other island museums belong to separate stages unless you have allowed for a much longer drive.

Best season, access, distances and equipment

From Le Relax at Ilet à Vidot, estimate roughly 2–5 km / 10–20 minutes to Hell-Bourg village access, and around 10–18 km / 20–40 minutes toward the selected Salazie waterfall-viewing stop. Road conditions and the precise starting point matter; hiking time is additional.

The cooler, generally drier part of the year often suits walking, but the highlands can still be wet and cold at night. Carry insulation, waterproofs, grippy footwear, water, maps and a headlamp. Review current trail closures and volcanic-access notices before a separate volcano trip.

Reviewed October 13, 2026. Prices are dated published references, not guaranteed quotes. Driving distances and times are broad planning estimates from the stated base; add walking time and confirm current routes, seasonal opening, permissions and booking conditions.
