Pays de la Loire Camping: River Trails, Anjou & Atlantic

Pays de la Loire camping suits cycling, river villages and Atlantic stages. Le Thoureil and the Saumur area provide an inland example with small rural camping and heritage outings. Vendée beaches, Nantes and northern countryside deserve their own bases.

Departments covered by this regional guide

Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe and Vendée.

Natural places to visit

Explore Loire landscapes around Le Thoureil and choose a marked walking or cycling section at a comfortable pace. Leave time for village stops rather than turning every day into a long-distance ride.

For a wider trip, consider the Atlantic coast, Brière wetland country, Mayenne’s riverside paths or Sarthe woodland. Waterways and protected wetlands have their own access conditions; a sandbank or quiet towpath does not establish camping permission.

Camping inside the destination

Éco-lieu du Bois Davy at Le Thoureil offers a small rural camping base. Ask whether your tent or touring vehicle is accepted, how it reaches the pitch and whether overnight parking is part of the booking.

Small rural sites may suit lightweight tents better than large motorhomes. Reserve the exact arrangement rather than assuming that a cabin or unusual-accommodation listing includes an ordinary touring pitch.

Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac

No specifically authorized free serviced tent campground was verified for this Loire-base itinerary. Seek permission for a named stop and confirm its maximum stay. Public daytime parking, a riverside picnic area and access to a cycle route are separate from overnight permission.

The tourism listing publishes component references of €4 per adult, €4 per pitch and electricity at €2–€4. The operator’s displayed conditions explain the €4 pitch limit as up to two structures and/or six people, and distinguish moderate from continuous electrical use. Confirm which package or person charges apply and any tourist tax; a €4 line is not a complete stay price.

Shared facilities include kitchen and shower access according to the operator. Only a small number of electrical pitches are advertised. Ask about potable water, sanitary arrangements, vehicle disposal, arrivals and any seasonal limits.

Restaurants, museums and cultural stops

For a meal in the wider Saumur area, the official restaurant directory includes L’Essentiel and other French dining options. Check the selected restaurant’s actual menu and book directly. Use a designated driver when including vineyard visits.

The Château-Musée de Saumur, Loire boating heritage at Le Thoureil and nearby art collections complement a shorter nature day. Tickets and guided activities are separate from camping.

Best season, access, distances and equipment

From Bois Davy, Le Thoureil village access is a short local outing, roughly 1–4 km depending on the route. Saumur is around 25–35 km / 30–45 minutes by road; a cycle itinerary may be longer or slower. Choose the actual road or cycle track rather than relying on a straight-line distance.

Late spring to early autumn usually suits tents and cycling. Pack rainwear, layers, water, sun protection, lights, a repair kit and offline maps. Confirm the small campsite’s availability before committing to a full day’s ride to it.
