This Papua New Guinea camping guide connects four regional introductions with focused Port Moresby and Bougainville articles. Find selected nature, cultural interpretation, hosted stays and permit sources through the directory. This first series is not a province-by-province catalogue, and a lodge or hotel enquiry is not presented as a confirmed own-tent campsite.

Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel nationwide. The UK advisory advises against all but essential travel to Hela and Southern Highlands, and Enga except Wabag District. Read the full advice and your own government’s guidance before planning; the countries’ assessment levels differ.
UK regional guidance also identifies border risks and prior authorization for the designated Panguna mine no-go area in Bougainville. Tourism marketing does not override access restrictions. The linked articles are research references and do not establish that independent travel is appropriate.
Papua New Guinea camping: regional directory
The Tourism Promotion Authority groups destinations into Papua, Highlands, Momase and Islands regions. Port Moresby belongs to the Papua regional framework, while Bougainville is also covered within the Islands framework; their focused articles add detail without treating them as extra national regions.

What is actually confirmed
Kokoda’s responsible authority publishes trekking permits and a code covering village guesthouse and landowner campsite charges. These are different from a complete guided expedition quote. The Momase guide identifies a named tourism-listed camping-style hosted stay and explains the need to confirm the exact sleeping product.
Other selected sources establish hotels, lodges, bungalows or rooms, but not an independent tent or vehicle pitch. The regional articles make that distinction explicit. Do not reserve a furnished stay assuming you can instead pitch outside it, and do not turn a room price into a supposed campsite tariff.
Permits and complete quotations
The Papua Region article links KTA’s actual permit schedule. A permit does not cover every personal expense: accommodation, meals and community activities need their own agreed arrangements. Request an itemized dated quote from the operator, including transport, guide support, equipment and local fees.
No nationwide camping tariff or verified free campground in every region was established. Ask the actual manager for occupancy and maximum-stay conditions. A park entrance fee, sightseeing ticket, airport parking payment or village visit does not create overnight permission.
Transport, services and entry
Australia’s advice highlights crime, transport risks, service interruptions and possible short-notice track disruption. Reconfirm conditions with the actual operator and accommodation provider. Roads, boats and flights require separate planning, with communications and contingency arrangements appropriate to the journey.
Check current entry guidance and PNG immigration requirements for your own passport, including visa eligibility and the Digital Arrival Card. Use official channels and verify applicable documents before booking nonrefundable travel.
Tents and vehicles
The series does not assume a conventional self-drive motorhome network. Check roads, approved overnight locations, secure transfers, vehicle suitability, water and waste provision with the host. A room described as self-contained does not establish an authorized motorhome facility.
For hosted or expedition camping, confirm whether tents, bedding, mosquito nets, cooking equipment and lighting are supplied. Establish safe drinking-water and sanitation arrangements before departure. Do not rely on a general accommodation directory for these details.
Culture and dining
Arrange community visits through the appropriate host and obtain consent before entering private or sacred places, photographing people or attending an activity. Museums and memorials have their own opening and access rules. Leave wartime relics and cultural objects undisturbed.
The regional articles identify actual restaurant or hosted-meal enquiries where sources support them. Confirm opening, visitor access, menu, dietary needs and inclusions directly. A resort restaurant elsewhere in a region is not represented as beside a remote campsite.
Weather, distance and equipment
Use the actual host, landing, entrance and overnight stage for route estimates. A city-to-city distance does not include the final road, boat transfer, guide meeting or trail stage. Select dates using present access information and activity-specific conditions.
Pack suitable footwear, weather protection, lighting and the supplies agreed with the operator. Establish communications, emergency arrangements and an alternative plan if access changes. Keep the dated official sources under review; an earlier tourism listing is not live confirmation of availability.
