Nouvelle-Aquitaine camping covers a vast region. A Dordogne valley holiday, a Landes coastal trip and a Basque mountain route each need their own bases. Cénac-et-Saint-Julien is the detailed example here, combining a licensed riverside campsite with villages, viewpoints and cultural stops.
Departments covered by this regional guide
Charente, Charente-Maritime, Corrèze, Creuse, Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne and Haute-Vienne.
Natural places to visit
Walk or choose a properly arranged canoe outing in the Dordogne valley around Cénac, Domme and La Roque-Gageac. The Marqueyssac gardens provide woodland paths and valley viewpoints with separate admission.
For a longer regional route, add the Atlantic coast, Landes forests, Limousin lake country or the western Pyrenees from closer campsites. River level, swimming access and equipment-rental conditions need checking; a scenic bank is not a tent pitch.
Camping inside the destination
The municipal campsite at Cénac has 112 pitches beside the Dordogne, about 500 m from village shops. Its published 2026 season was May 30–September 12. Confirm the next season directly instead of treating it as a current October overnight option.
The municipality states that it has no mobile homes and does not take reservations for a single night. Ask how a short stop is handled and whether your tent, caravan or motorhome fits the proposed pitch.
Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac
No specifically authorized free serviced tent site was verified for this Dordogne itinerary. Request permission for a precise alternative from the municipality or landowner, including stay limits. Riverside picnic space, canoe access and ordinary village parking do not establish overnight camping rights.
Nearby paid camping: published rates and facilities
The 2026 municipal tariff lists a tent pitch at €7 and adults at €5 each: two adults and tent total €17 before electricity and tourist tax. Electricity is €4.50, and tourist tax is listed at €0.22 per applicable person/day. A caravan or motorhome pitch line is €9; confirm occupant and vehicle inclusion.
Hot water is listed as included, while use of the service-point token costs €3. Reserve the equipment category and ask about sanitary facilities, drinking water, disposal, arrivals and cancellation terms. Confirm child exemptions and the final payable amount.
Restaurants, museums and cultural stops
La Traverse Chez les Filles in central Cénac offers a local restaurant stop; verify the seasonal menu and opening days. Pair a shorter outing with Domme’s historic streets, Marqueyssac or nearby château visits, booking admissions separately.
Sarlat and the Vézère’s prehistoric heritage make later culture days. On an Atlantic stage, Bordeaux or Rochefort needs a new base rather than an extended return journey from the Dordogne.
Best season, access, distances and equipment
From the municipal camp, the village is about 500 m away. Domme is roughly 3–6 km / 10–15 minutes by road; Marqueyssac is around 6–10 km / 10–20 minutes, and Sarlat about 12–18 km / 20–30 minutes. The selected gate and road change the exact total.
Late spring through summer suits the published camping season; shoulder dates depend on the operator. Bring a forecast-matched sleeping system, rain protection, water and sun protection. Use a professional operator for canoe trips and keep river conditions and return transport in the plan.
