Northland camping planning starts with the actual overnight product, land manager and travel dates. This guide introduces selected nature and cultural options in Northland, New Zealand; it is not an exhaustive list of towns or campgrounds. Distinguish a tent pitch, a motorhome site and supplied accommodation before reserving.
Northland camping: nature and activities
Camp behind the dunes at Uretiti Beach and enjoy the coastal landscape. Surf, currents and weather determine appropriate activities; a sandy beach does not guarantee safe swimming. Use the actual beach access and protect dune vegetation.
Designated camping and paid stays
Uretiti Beach Campsite publishes NZ$18 per adult/night and NZ$9 for ages 5–17; under-fives are free. Bookings are required and no spaces are held for unbooked arrivals. It has 300 nonpowered/tent sites and NZ$2 coin showers. Gates are locked 9pm–7am. Dogs and fires are prohibited. December 28–January 1 has a three-night minimum, which is not a maximum-stay rule.
Free camping, permissions and stay limits
No free overnight site with fully verified current permission and a numeric maximum stay was established for this selected itinerary. Check the relevant land manager and local signs before choosing an alternative; a scenic car park is not automatically an overnight site.
Tents, cars and motorhomes
Confirm the booking category and stand dimensions for your actual equipment. Check toilets, drinking water, cooking facilities, showers, electricity and approved waste disposal individually. A nonpowered site does not include a supplied tent, and a parked car is not automatically an authorized overnight stay. Ask about hire equipment separately.
Culture and interpretation
Waitangi Treaty Grounds offers museums, Treaty House and guided interpretation. It is a separate Bay of Islands visit rather than a facility beside Uretiti. Check admission and the current tour programme; use the appropriate guides to understand the site’s history.
Restaurants and food planning
The Treaty Grounds opening page currently marks Whare Waka Cafe closed. Do not rely on older dining listings. Ask about separately bookable evening food experiences or arrange another meal before visiting. A cultural ticket does not automatically include dinner.
Season, distances and equipment
DOC locates the Uretiti turn-off on SH1 about 5km north of Waipū, or 34km south of Whangārei. These are approach distances, not travel times to Waitangi. Plan that cultural excursion separately and return before the campsite gate closes.
Dated sources and final checks
Research checked October 29, 2026. Prices are New Zealand dollars and apply only to the stated product, age group and season. Reconfirm the complete total, extras and booking conditions directly before paying. Where no numeric maximum stay was verified, ask the manager rather than assuming unlimited occupancy.
Check the national guide’s official weather, DOC and freedom-camping sources before departure. Use current local alerts for the selected site and activity. Respect mana whenua and community hosts, protect wildlife and carry out waste where required. Pack footwear, weather protection, lighting and the supplies your actual stay needs.
