This North Estonia camping guide focuses on a Lahemaa itinerary around Oandu and Tepelvälja, with forest walks, coastal heritage and a manor museum. Stay at one base and leave time for nature, food and culture. Sources and published tariffs checked on 16 October 2026. Prices are euros (EUR); an undated tariff is identified as such and must be confirmed for your travel dates.
North Estonia camping guide: nature and walks
Choose a route from Oandu Visitor Centre. Options include the 4.7 km old-growth forest trail and shorter plant or heritage walks. Match the route to your time and ability, keeping to marked paths. Altja gives the trip a coastal element. This local base covers a part of North Estonia; Alutaguse and the northeastern coast require separate driving days.
Established camping and checked prices
Haaviku Nature Lodge in Tepelvälja lists tent camping at EUR 15 per person, including showers, toilets and an equipped outdoor kitchen. Two campers therefore total EUR 30 before optional extras. Laundry is EUR 5, and bicycle hire is listed at EUR 10 per day. VAT is included; payment is described as cash or bank transfer. The page contains 2026 dates for cottages, but the tent line has no separate tariff year. Confirm the tent rate and opening for your dates. A motorhome touring pitch has not been verified here: ask before bringing a camping vehicle rather than applying the tent tariff to it.
Ask the operator to confirm the complete charge for your party and equipment. Check pitch access, arrival times, drinking water, showers and waste disposal before booking. A price page does not guarantee availability or year-round touring services.
Free authorized camping and alternatives
RMK Oandu Campsite is a designated basic tent option, within Estonia’s public RMK camping network. Its record permits up to 15 four-person tents and describes dry-toilet and picnic facilities. Drinking water is listed at the visitor centre well 300 m away. Check current access, any charges and stay conditions before arrival; no numbered-pitch reservation or unlimited stay is promised. Cars use the parking area. The reservoir is unsuitable for swimming.
Restaurant and local food
Altja Tavern is a named local meal stop in the fishing village within Lahemaa. Check its current menu and seasonal opening; keep provisions at camp if kitchen service is unavailable.
Culture beyond the campsite
The Sagadi Forest Centre includes a forest museum and manor museum. It connects the wooded landscape with local history. Allow time for the exhibitions and grounds, with opening and admission checked independently.
Season, access and equipment
Late spring to early autumn is the simplest planning window. Oandu to Altja is approximately 2 km, while Sagadi is roughly 3 km from the Oandu campsite according to RMK. Allow short local drives or longer walks using an appropriate path. Haaviku is a separate nearby base: confirm its exact directions. Forest boardwalks and roots can be slippery after rain. Pack waterproof shoes, insect protection and drinking water.
Pack waterproof layers, warm bedding, walking shoes, insect protection, drinking water and offline maps. Bring a headtorch for dark evenings and use designated waste facilities. Check RMK’s current rules before forest camping or using a fire site. Respect local closures, quiet hours and sensitive ground.
