Mauritius camping needs a clear distinction between a personal-tent pitch, a furnished glamping stay and a conventional room. This collection covers the main island’s nine geographical districts, Rodrigues, and access-reference pages for Agaléga and Saint Brandon. It explains what the sources establish about overnight options and what still requires a specific permission or booking response.
Mauritius camping guides by district and island
Choose an area below. Each guide includes local context, accommodation evidence, practical questions and a return link here. The nine main-island districts are geographical reference areas: Statistics Mauritius notes that they differ from the municipal and district council areas used for local administration. Rodrigues and the outer-island entries are separate island references, not extra main-island districts.

The government has reaffirmed public access to the seashore, but a right to walk, sit or picnic is not evidence of a booked tent pitch. The Beach Authority documents camping among activities for which it issues beach-use authorisations. Ask it about the exact location, dates, group and equipment before relying on a beach-camping plan. An application submitted is not an authorisation granted.
Use the official beach-use enquiry and application process and obtain a clear written response. Ask what conditions, facilities and time limits apply to the proposed activity rather than assuming that a popular family beach operates as a conventional campground. Keep a confirmed room if the outdoor arrangement has not been established.
Protected places are not informal overnight alternatives
The government’s forestry notice prohibits camping or overnight stays between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. in nature reserves, mountain reserves and islet nature reserves, and identifies places with access restrictions. It specifically mentions Le Pouce and Corps de Garde among its examples. Read the full official notice and ask the relevant manager for current site-specific arrangements.
Do not infer overnight permission from a trail, picnic area, botanical garden, viewpoint or boat landing. A paid day excursion also does not establish permission to remain after it ends. Identify the responsible custodian and keep the daytime activity separate from the property where you will sleep. A heritage designation is a reason to understand and respect a place, not a camping reservation.
Know what a furnished outdoor stay includes
Some accommodation creates an outdoor experience while providing a bed and a managed unit. The Bubble Lodge offers in this collection are furnished stays, not general personal-tent campgrounds. Compare them with a room or another furnished property on the basis of the actual inclusions: meals, transfers, activities, luggage and the unit you have reserved.
If bringing your own tent, ask directly whether it is accepted. A self-catering apartment remains a building-based option unless the host establishes a separate outdoor offer. A garden, beach-facing plot or nature photograph is not enough. This research does not establish a named operating public personal-tent campground for each district; the guides say so instead of filling those gaps with invented sites.
Choose a base for the visit you want
A capital heritage visit, a botanical-garden outing, an inland cultural stop and a coastal stay have different transport needs. Choose the actual overnight address first and add a manageable visit. The regional label alone does not tell you whether a property is beside the attraction, close to your arrival point or served by the transport you intend to use.
Ask the host about pickup, luggage storage, meals and the return journey from an excursion. For a final night, leave enough time for the onward connection rather than trying to finish a remote outing immediately before departure. A conventional room can be the most practical option for a short visit while still allowing a full day outdoors.
Rodrigues and the outer islands need separate arrangements
Rodrigues has autonomous regional status and its own accommodation and transport arrangements. The tourism office lists hotels, gîtes and tourist residences. Reserve the stay and island connection with compatible dates, and confirm the actual service with the carrier. A general island description is not a sailing or flight timetable.
Agaléga and Saint Brandon are included as access-reference pages, not open-access camping recommendations. Infrastructure, staff quarters or a settlement do not establish visitor accommodation. The Saint Brandon specialist programme cited in its guide describes guesthouse accommodation. Any remote stay would need appropriate written access confirmation and a complete operator plan for transport, supplies and the return journey.
Sources and how to use them
Use the Statistics Mauritius census atlas for the distinction between geographical districts and council areas. The Tourism Authority accommodation register supplies conventional lodging leads. The Beach Authority report documents its authorisation activity, while the specific operator and heritage sources are linked in each guide. Reconfirm present operation, facilities, permission and dates directly before treating any lead as an overnight arrangement.
