Koshi Camping Guide: Everest, Tea Hills and Tented Wildlife Stays

Koshi camping spans the warm eastern plains, tea-growing hills and some of Nepal’s highest mountain landscapes. Choose one environment first: a furnished safari tent, a village base or a supported mountain trek. These trips need different equipment, permissions and transport plans.

Travel planning note — reviewed 24 October 2026: check current official travel advice before booking. Confirm local access, weather and overnight permission with the responsible operator or park office.

Nature and places to explore

Begin with Koshi Tappu for wetland birdwatching, or choose Ilam and Kanyam for tea-country scenery. Farther north, Sagarmatha, Makalu-Barun and Kanchenjunga offer mountain journeys. Do not combine a lowland birding break and an Everest trek as if they were neighboring day trips. High trails require acclimatization, suitable staff and time for weather delays.

Use the Nepal Tourism Board’s destination information as background, then confirm the conditions for your travel dates.

Koshi camping: paid stays and approved sites

For a furnished tent, investigate Koshi Tappu Wildlife Camp’s operator brochure. It documents safari tents, beds, bathrooms and a central restaurant. The brochure is dated 2018, so reconfirm that the same tent product and services are operating before paying. Ask which outings, reserve fees and transfers the current quote includes.

For mountain camping, ask a registered trekking agency to identify permitted overnight sites on your exact Makalu or Kanchenjunga itinerary. Everest routes also have lodge-based options; a personal tent does not remove entry or trekking requirements. Do not occupy expedition base camps or private lodge land without specific permission.

Free camping and permission

No unrestricted free public campground was verified for this guide. Ask the land manager and protected-area office about a specific pitch; a permit to enter is not permission to camp.

Entry fees and the real trip budget

Koshi Tappu’s published entry fee is NPR 1,500 for other foreign nationals, NPR 750 for SAARC visitors and NPR 100 for Nepalis. Source: NTB’s central park-entry table. These are entry charges, not nightly camping rates. Reconfirm additional taxes and activity fees directly.

Check NTB’s route-specific guide and TIMS requirements with a registered trekking agency. Camping consent and other permits remain separate.

Request an itemized quote covering accommodation, transport, meals, guiding, equipment and permissions. No universal tent-pitch rate applies to the whole province. Ask about deposits, cancellation terms and alternatives if access closes.

Food and dining

The camp’s Golghar restaurant is a documented dining lead, subject to current opening and meal confirmation. In the hills, ask your host for a freshly prepared dal bhat meal; on a supported trek, confirm that a cook, fuel and dietary requirements are included. Do not assume a remote campsite has a shop or kitchen.

Culture and considerate visits

Give Ilam’s tea landscapes their own time instead of treating them as a photo stop on an Everest itinerary. In the high mountains, visit Sherpa communities respectfully and ask before entering monasteries or photographing ceremonies. Local hosts can explain which visits welcome guests and which areas are private.

Getting there and choosing a season

Biratnagar is a useful gateway for eastern lowland planning; mountain access is a separate itinerary. Obtain a dated transfer plan from the operator and leave a buffer before international travel. For wetland outings, ask about current water levels and guided access. For high trails, confirm suitable rescue insurance and a conservative altitude plan.

A lowland stay and a high-altitude trek do not share a single packing list. Ask about heat and insects in the plains, while preparing for freezing nights and weather changes in the mountains. Never choose a riverside pitch merely because the ground looks dry.

Before you book

Confirm the exact overnight location, current authorization and a realistic arrival plan. Pack out waste, protect water sources and use only approved cooking arrangements. Check our Nepal camping guide to compare the seven provinces before choosing a route.
