Kenya Camping Guide: All 47 Counties and Overnight Options

Kenya camping offers very different overnight experiences: a pitch for your own tent, an exclusive campsite, a fully furnished safari tent or a room used as a base for outdoor visits. This guide connects all 47 counties and makes those differences explicit. Use the county cards to find the right manager or property, then confirm dates, facilities and the exact location before booking.

Kenya camping guides by county

Choose a county below. Each guide links back here and identifies whether its overnight information concerns a park campsite, a private operator or accommodation that still needs to be confirmed. The collection follows Kenya’s current 47-county framework, rather than the former provinces.

Understand the overnight product

A public campsite and a special campsite are different booking categories. KWS describes public sites with basic facilities and special sites as advance-reserved, exclusive arrangements requiring self-sufficiency. Ask the specific park what is operating at your chosen ground. A general description cannot guarantee a working water point, equipment hire or the conditions on a particular date.

A furnished tented camp is also a different product from pitching your own tent. Some safari properties provide beds, bathrooms and meals; others advertise simple ground space. Ask which arrangement the quote covers, who supplies bedding and what facilities are shared. Compare the full stay cost, including transport and activities, rather than a pitch price against a full-board room.

Match the county, park and manager

Kenya camping bookings are easier to compare when the exact location is clear. A tourism name may span neighbouring counties, and a town used for pickup may be far from the overnight site. Ask for the actual entrance, site or property name and the manager responsible for your stay. A postal address is not always the physical location.

For example, the Mara Triangle has its own campsite information through Mara Conservancy. Samburu-branded accommodation may be located in a neighbouring reserve, so check the actual boundary and charging arrangements. A permit for one reserve should not be assumed to cover another. The county guides flag these location questions instead of assigning every regional brand to a single county.

Choose a manageable outdoor programme

Separate a lower forest stay from a multi-day mountain trek. The equipment, pacing and support requirements differ, even when the destination shares a mountain name. Discuss terrain, weather decisions and turnaround arrangements with a qualified guide. A campsite reservation does not automatically include guiding, a vehicle or access to every trail.

For lakes and islands, confirm both the overnight and the crossing. Ask who operates the boat, which safety equipment is carried, where you board and how a delayed return is handled. Keep a mainland alternative when appropriate. A lakeside room or beach frontage is not evidence of permission to camp or swim wherever you choose.

Culture with willing local hosts

Kenya camping can include meaningful cultural visits when they are arranged with consent. Ask a local guide or community host to explain what is welcome, the agreed fees and photography rules. Working farms, workshops, training facilities and places of worship should be entered through an accepted visit, rather than treated as open attractions.

Some county guides focus on heritage and a confirmed room because a public tent site has not been verified. That is a useful planning distinction. A museum, viewpoint or tourism-development proposal does not establish overnight facilities. Keep an unanswered camping enquiry out of the confirmed itinerary and retain a room when the host cannot describe a suitable pitch.

Read the current regional advice first

Kenya camping plans must reflect the exact current regional travel map. Several northeastern and coastal areas carry official warnings. Consult the detailed advice linked below before choosing a route; a campsite advertisement does not override it. The affected county guides explain the relevant planning limits and avoid proposing leisure routes through warned-against areas.

For remote or rural transfers, ask the host and relevant authorities about current access before departure. A historic trip report or an attractive map shortcut is not enough. Keep a named arrival contact and an alternative plan if conditions change. Confirm transport in daylight and leave a buffer before a separate international flight.

Before paying for Kenya camping

Request a written quotation covering the sleeping arrangement, all charges, deposit and cancellation policy. Itemise entry, camping, vehicle support, guiding, meals and equipment. Ask about toilets, washing, drinking water, shade and charging. Establish whether your tent or vehicle is accepted, and what happens if the allocated ground becomes unavailable.

Pack for the programme that has actually been agreed, with suitable footwear, weather protection, lighting and power. Discuss dietary and mobility needs in advance. Follow the manager’s instructions on wildlife, fires, cooking and waste. Keep the booking and contacts offline, and use an explicitly accepted overnight location rather than an improvised roadside stop.
