This India camping guide connects ten selected travel areas, from Himalayan villages to forest programmes, desert hospitality and island tented cottages. Start with an identified overnight product and a realistic region, then confirm permission, weather and price. A furnished tent, a supervised forest trek and a pitch for your own tent offer different experiences and services.
Choose a regional camping route
These are selected destinations and combined travel areas, not all Indian states or union territories. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have separate guides; Rajasthan–Gujarat and Maharashtra–Goa each share a planning guide. The other guides focus on Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Meghalaya and the Andaman Islands. An onward cultural stop does not mean a campsite was verified there.

Which kind of overnight stay suits you?
Bring your own tent: Hiranya in Maharashtra explicitly advertises this option, along with supplied tents and overlander space. Confirm the actual pitch and services. Managed nature accommodation: Bheemeshwari in Karnataka offers a tented-cottage package. Guided forest camping: Periyar’s Tiger Trail in Kerala is a supervised programme with eligibility and departure conditions. Seasonal hospitality: Dhordo’s Tent City and Hanuwantiya’s event tents require confirmation for the actual season. Island resort tents: Havelock’s tented cottages are furnished accommodation, not public beach pitches.
Permission and free camping
No free authorized campsite with fully confirmed current permission was established in the reviewed routes. Do not interpret this as a claim that none exist anywhere in India. Ask the landowner, forest department or site manager for approval covering the exact place, dates and activity. Day access, a trekking advertisement, a beach shack or vehicle parking does not by itself establish an overnight camping right.
Foreign visitors should check visa eligibility separately from any Protected or Restricted Area Permit. The Indian embassy’s permit guidance identifies the e-FRRO route for applicable areas. Requirements depend on location and nationality; a camp booking cannot replace immigration or protected-area permission. Border-area extensions need specific checks.
What do camping packages cost?
Compare dated written totals rather than headline prices. Bheemeshwari’s reviewed operator page displayed a discounted tent-package starting figure of INR 5,108 per person per night on twin sharing, with dynamic tariffs. The state directory for Hanuwantiya listed a tent reference of INR 6,500 plus GST without a clear occupancy basis. These are different products and neither is a national budget benchmark. Reconfirm taxes, meals, entry, transport, activities and single-person supplements.
Seasons, access and regional risk
There is no single suitable camping season across India. Himalayan snow and monsoon disruption differ from desert night temperatures, southern humidity and island sea conditions. Choose dates for the exact site and elevation, and obtain current road, river or ferry information. Avoid putting a remote campsite immediately before an essential flight. In protected forests, follow guides and stay within authorized areas; on rivers, use approved activities and current safety instructions.
Consult UK travel advice and your own government’s advice before finalizing the itinerary. The reviewed advice includes serious regional restrictions for Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur. Those areas are not promoted as camping routes in this series. Conditions can change, and warnings for one region should not be assumed to apply identically to the whole country.
Food, culture and equipment
Use the regional guides to plan camp meals, separate town restaurants and cultural days. Ellora, Dharamshala’s museums, Shillong and Narmada heritage stops can complement nature travel, but many require transfers and their own overnight base. Pack for the actual accommodation: a furnished lodge may need only personal essentials, while a trek requires the operator’s specified kit. Confirm bedding, toilets, drinking water, luggage limits, mobile coverage and emergency arrangements before departure.
