Hawke’s Bay camping planning starts with the actual overnight product, land manager and travel dates. This guide introduces selected nature and cultural options in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand; it is not an exhaustive list of towns or campgrounds. Distinguish a tent pitch, a motorhome site and supplied accommodation before reserving.
Hawke’s Bay camping: nature and activities
Waipatiki offers a coastal stay north of Napier, while the Mōhaka River has a very different inland setting. Choose activities using present surf, river and weather information; neither beachfront marketing nor a river photograph guarantees safe swimming.
Designated camping and paid stays
Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park lists powered and unpowered sites for tents, caravans and campervans. For October 1–December 22, 2026, its schedule gives powered NZ$32/adult and NZ$14/child, unpowered NZ$28/adult and NZ$14/child. Christmas peak uses different minimum two-person site prices. Obtain the full dated total and child-age definition; powered bookings need the appropriate certified lead and RCD.
Free camping, permissions and stay limits
Waitara/Glenfalls is free and first come, but only for certified self-contained vehicles: no tents or other vehicles. DOC reports no toilets, uneven ground and flood risk after cyclone damage. Recheck alerts before use. No numeric maximum stay was established on the checked page; ask DOC and follow signs.
Tents, cars and motorhomes
Confirm the booking category and stand dimensions for your actual equipment. Check toilets, drinking water, cooking facilities, showers, electricity and approved waste disposal individually. A nonpowered site does not include a supplied tent, and a parked car is not automatically an authorized overnight stay. Ask about hire equipment separately.
Culture and interpretation
Kahukura Hawke’s Bay Museum in central Napier offers museum and gallery visits at 1 Tennyson Street, with free gallery entry. Choose the actual public exhibition venue; the organization’s collection facility elsewhere has different access arrangements.
Restaurants and food planning
Plan the campsite as self-catering. No current named restaurant menu beside the selected pitch was verified. Buy food before the final approach and confirm drinking-water and cooking arrangements. Town dining requires its own journey and opening check; it is not an assumed campground facility.
Season, distances and equipment
Waipatiki’s operator places the site about 30km from Napier, with an indicative 35-minute drive. Glenfalls is a different inland route via SH5. Do not use one travel time for both. Check weather, road access and river conditions before departure, and avoid flood-prone camping when conditions deteriorate.
Dated sources and final checks
Research checked October 29, 2026. Prices are New Zealand dollars and apply only to the stated product, age group and season. Reconfirm the complete total, extras and booking conditions directly before paying. Where no numeric maximum stay was verified, ask the manager rather than assuming unlimited occupancy.
Check the national guide’s official weather, DOC and freedom-camping sources before departure. Use current local alerts for the selected site and activity. Respect mana whenua and community hosts, protect wildlife and carry out waste where required. Pack footwear, weather protection, lighting and the supplies your actual stay needs.
