Southern Thailand: Gulf and Inland Forest Camping Guide: Khao Sok and Surat Thani

Southern Thailand forest camping offers a different rhythm from a beach holiday. Khao Sok in Surat Thani is the overnight focus here, linked with travel through the Gulf-side province. This grouping is a travel circuit: the park is inland, and its forest headquarters and lake visits require separate planning.

Nature and a realistic route

Start with rainforest walks around the park headquarters, choosing routes with staff advice. Cheow Lan Lake is a distinct excursion with its own transfers, boats and accommodation arrangements. A photograph of a floating raft house does not describe a land-based campsite, and a headquarters booking does not include a lake tour.

Authorized camping and overnight permission

A Tourism Authority of Thailand article confirms tent sites and bungalows at Khao Sok National Park. Request an authorized pitch directly through the park or DNP arrangements. Confirm the location, check-in procedure and any rental tent before travel. Guided overnight forest trips need their own explicit permission and operator arrangements; they are not included automatically with a camping ticket.

Free and paid camping: what to budget

The primary tourism source does not provide a current camping tariff. Obtain a quote for admission, pitch, tent, bedding and any guide. Price lake boats and raft-house accommodation separately if adding them. Ask what bathrooms, water supply, charging and meals are actually available at your chosen site. No verified free overnight camp is included.

Food and local culture

Use Surat Thani or the village near the park entrance to arrange supplies and a cooked meal. Southern dishes may feature coconut, turmeric, seafood and strong chilli; ask about spice levels, shrimp paste and other allergens. A small market meal before entering the park makes more sense than assuming a remote campsite will serve food late into the evening.

Getting there and planning your stay

TAT describes public van connections serving the park entrance area, including links from Surat Thani and the Andaman side. Confirm current departures and your final drop-off with the operator; published timetables may change. Allow a buffer between a forest stay and a flight or ferry. The lake departure point is not the same as the park headquarters entrance.

Carry rain protection, dry storage, insect repellent and footwear suited to slippery paths. Ask staff about leeches, river conditions, guide requirements and closed routes. Do not enter caves or cross swollen streams without current local authorization and suitable guidance. Leave animals undisturbed and keep food secured. Check the local forecast for this inland area rather than relying on a distant island forecast.
