Grand Est camping offers lakes and forest walking in the Vosges as well as separate trips through Alsace, the Ardennes and Champagne. A Longemer base lets you combine a lake day with Gérardmer and selected mountain routes. Treat the region’s distant cities and vineyards as later stages.
Departments covered by this regional guide
Ardennes, Aube, Marne, Haute-Marne, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin and Vosges.
Natural places to visit
Around Gérardmer and the surrounding Vosges, choose Longemer’s lakeside scenery, Gérardmer’s lake paths and a weather-appropriate Route des Crêtes outing. Forest walks and mountain viewpoints require different time allowances and access checks.
For a longer road journey, consider Ardennes woodland, Alsace foothills or Champagne lake country from closer campsites. Keep protected reserves and marked trail restrictions in the plan rather than applying one rule to the entire region.
Camping inside the destination
Camping Les Jonquilles at Xonrupt-Longemer is an established lake-area base. The 2026 tariff covers April 24–September 27, so do not present it as a confirmed October stay. Ask for the next opening period and the pitch that suits your tent, caravan or motorhome.
A licensed pitch is a straightforward overnight arrangement. A lake-access ticket, forest parking bay or day visit to a ski resort does not establish camping permission elsewhere.
Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac
No authorized free serviced tent site was verified for this Longemer itinerary. Check any proposed one-night forest stop with the land manager, municipality and reserve authority. Confirm the location, dates and stay limit; an unguarded shelter or a parking-app pin is not evidence of a legal tent pitch.
Nearby paid camping: published rates and facilities
The operator’s 2026 rate table lists a two-person pitch at €20.50 in its low season and €26 in high season, with 6-amp electricity included. Tourist tax is €0.65 per eligible adult/night; the lake-edge supplement is €9.50 and the displayed reservation fee is €10. Confirm all applicable extras.
Specify tent footprint or vehicle length and whether you require a lake-edge pitch. Ask about shower and potable-water provision, wastewater disposal and arrival times. An advertised basic package can differ from a premium waterfront booking.
Restaurants, museums and cultural stops
La Gérômoise in Gérardmer offers local cooking, including Vosges cheese dishes, in a former farmhouse. Verify the actual opening day and reserve when needed. A brewery visit, when offered, is a separate cultural activity.
Use a longer regional transfer to include Colmar, Strasbourg or Reims and their museums and historic centres. They are not nearby evening stops from Longemer; choose a new base rather than extending a mountain day with several hours of driving.
Best season, access, distances and equipment
From Les Jonquilles, Gérardmer is approximately 6–10 km / 10–20 minutes by road; the Col de la Schlucht area is about 10–15 km / 20–30 minutes, depending on the access chosen. Add walking time and verify seasonal road restrictions.
Late spring to early autumn generally suits lake camping, while higher Vosges paths can remain cold or exposed. Bring waterproofs, warm layers, water, suitable shoes and offline maps. Thunderstorms, ice and fog can change a ridge outing even when the lake weather feels pleasant.
