Extremadura camping guide. Plan for dehesa woodland, birdwatching, river gorges, reservoirs and historic towns. Cáceres and Badajoz offer different landscapes; a Monfragüe campsite is not a nearby base for every Jerte or Mérida outing. There are inland bathing beaches, rather than a marine coast.
Plan your wider route with our Spain camping guide. This guide covers the region by province. Camping permissions, seasonal access and booking conditions differ by destination.
Cáceres
Natural places and towns: Malpartida de Plasencia and the Monfragüe area suit birdwatching and woodland routes. Jerte’s gorges and waterfalls, Los Barruecos and Tajo Internacional require separate outing plans.
Camping inside the destination: Camping Monfragüe is a formal base near the national park. Use designated viewpoints and arrange park outings separately; do not camp at birdwatching viewpoints or riverbanks.
Nearby free camping: No unrestricted, free public tent campsite was verified for this itinerary. A picnic area or beach car park is not permission to camp. Ask the municipality and protected-area office about authorized sites, permits and maximum stay before choosing a free overnight stop.
Paid camping: Camping Monfragüe publishes a 2026 pitch at €18 including tent-and-car/caravan or motorhome/camper installation plus electricity, with people extra at €4.80 per adult aged 11+. Two adults total €27.60. Its separate €15 vehicle overnight arrangement is 21:00–09:00, without electricity or occupation of a camping pitch; confirm all inclusions before choosing it.
Restaurants: Monfragüe campsite restaurant offers regional meals and a daily menu. The published 2026 schedule closes Wednesdays; confirm current hours.
Museums and cultural stops: Plasencia’s historic centre complements the stay; Cáceres’ old town and museums are a separate city day.
Practical information: Spring and autumn suit birdwatching and lower walks. The campsite address is the Plasencia–Puerta de Trujillo road at km 9; estimate 10–15 minutes to Plasencia depending on destination. Carry binoculars, shade and drinking water; summer heat can make long midday hikes unsuitable.
Badajoz
Natural places and towns: Cornalvo near Trujillanos provides woodland and reservoir scenery. Orellana and La Siberia are separate lake-and-outdoor itineraries; use Mérida for a culture-and-nature combination.
Camping inside the destination: Use a registered campsite near your selected destination rather than camping on Cornalvo paths or Orellana’s public bathing beach.
Nearby free camping: No unrestricted, free public tent campsite was verified for this itinerary. A picnic area or beach car park is not permission to camp. Ask the municipality and protected-area office about authorized sites, permits and maximum stay before choosing a free overnight stop.
Paid camping: Mérida’s official accommodation directory lists Camping Mérida; request current pitch price, tent/car or motorhome acceptance and facilities. Mérida’s managed motorhome area is a vehicle alternative with date-dependent pricing; it is not a verified tent site.
Restaurants: Parador de Mérida restaurant at Calle Almendralejo 58 serves regional food during a city day; reserve and check current service.
Museums and cultural stops: Mérida’s National Museum of Roman Art, Roman theatre and archaeological sites provide a substantial cultural itinerary.
Practical information: Spring and autumn are useful for city walks and Cornalvo. Estimate roughly 3–5 km, 10–15 minutes from Camping Mérida’s Avenida Reina Sofía area to central archaeological-site parking. Cornalvo is a separate excursion. Carry water, a hat and binoculars; confirm reservoir bathing permissions.
