Cantabria camping guide. Cantabria is a single-province community with several very different camping areas. Choose a coastal base around Noja for beach days or a Liébana base for mountain routes. The Asón valley, Saja forests and Ebro Reservoir add separate day-trip or multi-base options.
Plan your wider route with our Spain camping guide. This guide covers the region by province. Camping permissions, seasonal access and booking conditions differ by destination.
Cantabria
Natural places and towns: Noja offers Playa de Ris and wetland scenery. Fuente Dé and Potes access the Cantabrian side of Picos de Europa. The Asón waterfall is a separate eastern valley outing; its flow changes with rainfall. For forests, investigate Saja-Besaya routes; for inland waters, plan a separate Ebro Reservoir stay.
Camping inside the destination: Playa Joyel is a designated coastal campsite with direct beach access, not permission to put a tent on Playa de Ris. El Redondo provides a formal Fuente Dé base. National-park overnight trekking conditions must be checked independently of campsite bookings.
Nearby free camping: No unrestricted, free public tent campsite was verified for this itinerary. A picnic area or beach car park is not permission to camp. Ask the municipality and protected-area office about authorized sites, permits and maximum stay before choosing a free overnight stop.
Paid camping: Camping Playa Joyel accepts tents and touring vehicles and advertises pools, restaurant and shop. Its published 2026 season ran March 27–September 27; check the next season before booking. No current full pitch total was verified. Camping El Redondo publishes rates and states that car parking is not separately charged when accompanying a tent or caravan; obtain the current party-and-unit total, electricity charges and opening dates.
Restaurants: Damai Surf Bar at Playa Joyel offers campsite dining including café and pizza options. El Redondo services lists a restaurant for the mountain itinerary; confirm menu and hours.
Museums and cultural stops: Combine a coastal stay with Santander’s Centro Botín or regional museums. Altamira’s museum and Santillana del Mar merit a separate excursion. For Liébana, visit Potes and Santo Toribio rather than planning a long same-day coastal commute.
Practical information: Late spring through early autumn generally gives the widest campsite choice; spring or autumn rain can improve waterfall flow but make trails slippery. Playa de Ris is reached on foot from Playa Joyel. Estimate roughly 1 km and 5 minutes from El Redondo to Fuente Dé’s cable-car base, plus parking and queues. Potes is approximately 25 km, 30–40 minutes away. Bring waterproof layers, boots, water and a warm mountain sleeping system.
Reservations, prices and equipment
Information checked on October 13, 2026. Published price examples below describe the stated package, not a guaranteed nightly quote. Where a current fixed tariff could not be verified, request a dated quote for your party, tent or vehicle, electricity and pets. Confirm opening dates, vehicle length, pitch access and cancellation terms directly before travel.
Carry a weatherproof tent, suitable sleeping bag and insulated pad, headlamp, first-aid kit, offline map, drinking water and layers. Match footwear and sun protection to your route. Mountain and coastal weather can differ sharply on the same trip.
