Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Camping: Jura Lakes & Forests

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté camping rewards travellers who give the Jura, Morvan and Burgundy countryside their own time. Use Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux for a Jura trip with waterfalls, forest walks and a museum afternoon; choose another overnight base for the Morvan or western Burgundy.

Departments covered by this regional guide

Côte-d’Or, Doubs, Jura, Nièvre, Haute-Saône, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne and Territoire de Belfort.

Natural places to visit

The Cascades du Hérisson have a main waterfall walk of about 7.4 km return. Wet steps and rocks require grippy footwear. Nearby Jura lake country and the Haut-Jura forests provide shorter alternatives; check swimming permissions and seasonal access separately.

Broader regional possibilities include Morvan woodland and lakes, the Doubs valley and Burgundy’s canal paths. These are distinct itineraries, not neighbouring stops that all fit into one day from a Jura campsite.

Camping inside the destination

Le Champ de Mars is a municipal campsite within the Haut-Jura regional-park landscape, about 500 m from Saint-Laurent’s centre. A regional park contains towns and licensed businesses; staying at this campsite does not authorize pitching at the waterfalls or beside any lake.

Its operator describes an annual autumn closure from October 1 to December 15 despite using year-round language elsewhere. Confirm the actual opening day for winter or future bookings.

Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac

No designated, currently free serviced tent site was verified for this proposed Jura base. Ask the land manager or municipality about a specific walking bivouac, its location and duration. A trail shelter, picnic table or lake car park is not an approved campground. Use a reserved paid pitch if permission cannot be confirmed.

The operator’s published December 2026–September 2027 tariff lists a two-person pitch without electricity at €17.60 in its winter band, €14.40 in the stated shoulder periods and €16.60 in summer; with electricity, €25, €20.50 and €22.70 respectively. These are future-season references, not retroactive 2026 summer prices.

The campsite advertises hot showers, heated sanitary blocks, laundry and touring-vehicle services. Confirm what the package includes for your vehicle and any tax or extra-person charge. Specify winter access and equipment if reserving a cold-weather stay.

Restaurants, museums and cultural stops

Le Kiosque at the campsite entrance offers takeaway pizzas; confirm its actual opening evenings. For a cultural outing, the Musée de la Lunette in Morez explores eyewear and optical history. The Maison des Cascades complements a Hérisson walk.

On a separate Burgundy leg, add historic Dijon or Beaune. Book tours independently and keep a designated driver for any wine-tasting itinerary.

Best season, access, distances and equipment

From Le Champ de Mars, estimate 10–15 km / 15–25 minutes to Morez and roughly 20–30 km / 25–40 minutes to the chosen Hérisson access. The town’s shops are around 500 m away. Spring through early autumn generally suits waterfall visits; winter camping requires a different sleeping system and road plan.

Carry a waterproof shell, layers, boots, water and offline maps. Waterfall paths can be slippery even in mild weather, and the plateau can be cold at night. Confirm the particular parking entrance and leave enough daylight for the return.

Reviewed October 13, 2026. Prices are dated published references, not guaranteed quotes. Driving distances and times are broad planning estimates from the stated base; add walking time and confirm current routes, seasonal opening, permissions and booking conditions.
