Botswana Camping Guide: All 31 Areas and Places to Visit

This Botswana camping guide connects 31 local-authority areas, from Chobe and the Okavango to the Kalahari and southern heritage towns. Choose a documented overnight base first, then add nature, cultural visits and meals that fit the route. The area guides distinguish bring-your-own-tent pitches from furnished safari accommodation and identify when no public campsite could be verified.

Why this index uses 31 areas

The Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs lists 31 local authorities. This series uses those names as an editorial index, with one guide for each plus this country overview. Older maps and other administrative datasets use different divisions. The articles do not claim that every named excursion is inside a particular boundary or that every settlement has an individual guide.

Documented camping leads and their different settings

Start with SKL for its listed wilderness campsites, Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe, Thakadu Bush Camp near Ghanzi, Sitatunga near Maun, Drotsky’s near Shakawe, and Kubu Island for its own salt-pan arrangements. These links establish advertised products, not live availability. A luxury “camp” may offer only furnished accommodation; ask specifically for a self-catering pitch if that is what you need.

Botswana camping prices: ask for a dated total

Displayed prices are not treated as guaranteed current tariffs. Woodlands separates person, vehicle and optional electricity charges. Khama Rhino Sanctuary separates camping from entry and vehicle fees and uses visitor-status categories. Limpopo River Lodge’s rate page is labelled 2025. Use the area guides for the quoted display details, and request a quote for your dates, nationality/residency category, ages, vehicle and activities. Pay only through a verified operator channel.

Reserve the campsite and establish park access

Agree the overnight sequence before taking a remote route. A campsite operator’s confirmation and park entry may be separate arrangements. Ask who issues each permit, what fees remain payable, gate hours and whether a vehicle or trailer is accepted. Do not assume one reservation covers every park on the circuit. Save confirmations offline and obtain the operator’s current approach instructions.

Botswana camping: travel warnings and remote driving

Read official Botswana travel advice for current entry, security and health information. The safety advice addresses crime in major towns, wildlife and road risks. Avoid night driving and secure valuables. For remote journeys, BTO’s self-drive guidance stresses preparation, suitable vehicles and supplies. Confirm recovery equipment, water and fuel margins, reliable communication and a route contact. Unfenced camps require a wildlife briefing; never approach animals or leave the designated area casually.

Botswana camping seasons and water conditions

BTO describes hot summer rain and dry, cold winter nights. May to August is generally the dry winter period; summer rain is variable and local. September and October can be very hot. Pack warm bedding as well as sun protection. The Okavango flood cycle differs from local rainfall, so seasonal labels do not prove that a track or water crossing is passable. Ask about conditions for the actual arrival date.

Free camping, food, culture and responsible visits

No authorised free camping area with verified stay terms was established for this series. Use designated, explicitly permitted pitches and observe the agreed stay limit. Confirm drinking water, sanitation, power and waste arrangements rather than inferring them from a photograph. Plan food before remote legs, check current veterinary controls and keep supplies secured. Reserve restaurants directly. Use authorised guides at heritage sites, request photographic consent and leave rock art, stonework and sacred places undisturbed.
