Bagmati Camping Guide: Chitlang, Kathmandu and Responsible Mountain Planning

Bagmati camping combines accessible hill retreats with Kathmandu Valley heritage and much more demanding mountain country. Chitlang offers a documented private camping lead. However, the usual Langtang approach through Syafrubesi needs special attention because current flood-damage warnings affect that corridor.

Current access warning — reviewed 24 October 2026: the U.S. advisory says not to travel to the Rasuwagadhi–Timure–Syafrubesi area after the August flood. This guide does not recommend the usual Syafrubesi approach to Langtang while that warning remains. Read the current advisory and arrange any future route only after authorities confirm access.

Nature and places to explore

Choose Chitlang for a village-and-hills break, and keep Kathmandu, Patan or Bhaktapur as separate heritage visits. Shivapuri-Nagarjun is another protected-area outing to arrange within its current access rules. Langtang is a longer mountain commitment, not an interchangeable weekend alternative to Chitlang.

Use the Nepal Tourism Board’s destination information as background, then confirm the conditions for your travel dates.

Bagmati camping: paid stays and approved sites

Chitlang Organic Village Resort documents tents and cottages, and says visitors need a booking or permission to set up their own tent. Ask whether you are reserving a furnished tent or a space for your equipment. Confirm toilets, bedding, meals, drinking water, vehicle access and the weather cancellation policy.

A private resort booking is the clearest lead here. For Shivapuri-Nagarjun or other protected land, obtain site-specific overnight approval rather than treating a day-entry permit as camping consent. Keep a room-based fallback if the campground is closed or heavy rain makes access unsuitable.

Free camping and permission

No unrestricted free campsite was verified. Ask the landowner or park office about a named site before pitching.

Entry fees and the real trip budget

Shivapuri-Nagarjun’s published entry fee is NPR 1,000 for other foreign nationals, NPR 600 for SAARC visitors and NPR 100 for Nepalis. Source: NTB’s central park-entry table. These are entry charges, not nightly camping rates. Reconfirm additional taxes and activity fees directly.

Check NTB’s route-specific guide and TIMS requirements with a registered trekking agency. Camping consent and other permits remain separate.

Request an itemized quote covering accommodation, transport, meals, guiding, equipment and permissions. No universal tent-pitch rate applies to the whole province. Ask about deposits, cancellation terms and alternatives if access closes.

Food and dining

Chitlang Organic Village Resort advertises food and barbecue options; ask for a current meal package and vegetarian arrangements. Around the Kathmandu Valley, seek a Newari meal through a local host or restaurant and ask what is freshly available. Confirm the bill and any service charges before ordering a group meal.

Culture and considerate visits

Plan time for the valley’s living religious and architectural heritage rather than rushing between viewpoints. Dress respectfully at temples and ask where entry or photography is restricted. A community walk in Chitlang should respect farms, homes and working paths; permission to stay at a resort does not grant access to neighboring land.

Getting there and choosing a season

Choose a transfer route with the property after checking road conditions. Mountain roads can change after rain, so avoid relying on an old driving-time estimate. Leave daylight for arrival and keep an alternate accommodation plan. Obtain a clear pickup point and decide in advance what happens if the road closes.

For a hill camp, bring rain protection and enough insulation for the forecast. Use only the operator’s approved cooking area. Keep tents away from drainage channels and unstable edges. Do not enter damaged roads or cross weakened bridges in order to reach an advertised viewpoint.

Before you book

Confirm the exact overnight location, current authorization and a realistic arrival plan. Pack out waste, protect water sources and use only approved cooking arrangements. Check our Nepal camping guide to compare the seven provinces before choosing a route.
