Algarve Camping Guide: Beaches, Ria Formosa & Sagres

Algarve camping starts with a practical choice: a mountain base, a beach campsite or a town with nature nearby. This Algarve guide pairs scenic day trips with named overnight options, food stops and cultural visits.

Use the distances below as approximate planning estimates from the named campsite, not live navigation. Road conditions, traffic, parking and the exact trailhead can change the journey. Reserve with the operator and confirm your dates, party, tent dimensions or vehicle length before travelling.

Choose a western, central or eastern base: the distances across the Algarve make separate camps more practical than repeated long drives. Beaches, dunes and cliff car parks are day-trip locations unless camping is expressly authorized.

Alvor, Portimão and Silves

Natural places: Explore Alvor beach and estuary walks. A separate outing towards Carvoeiro and Marinha gives cliff scenery and the Seven Hanging Valleys walking route. Follow its marked path and plan a return transfer if walking only one way.

Camping inside or nearby: Camping Alvor accepts tents, caravans and motorhomes and states 1.6 km to Alvor beach. Its facilities include hot water, 6- or 10-amp electricity, Wi-Fi, laundry and a disposal point free for staying guests. Ask about pitch shade, car parking and pool access.

Verified paid tariff: The 2026 table lists adults at €5 / €6.50 / €7.50 / €8, tent at €5.50 / €7.50 / €8.50 / €9.50 and car at €5 / €6 / €7 / €8 for October–May (three or more nights), June and September, July, and August. Two adults, tent and car total €20.50 / €26.50 / €30.50 / €33.50 before electricity, taxes or extras. Ask about shorter low-season stays and the separate motorhome charge.

Nearby free camping: No authorized free tent site was verified at Alvor beach or the estuary. Confirm any vehicle stop’s current local rules and maximum stay; parking does not authorize outdoor camp equipment.

Restaurants and culture: The Camping Alvor restaurant and bar provides meals and snacks at camp. Add Silves castle and archaeology museum for a cultural outing, or Portimão’s town and riverfront.

Practical information: Beach access is 1.6 km away, roughly 20–30 minutes on foot depending on the gate. Estimate 25–30 km / 30–40 minutes to Silves and 30–40 km / 35–50 minutes towards Marinha. Spring and autumn suit hiking; start early in summer. Carry water, sun protection and grippy shoes for limestone paths.

Cabanas de Tavira, Olhão and Ria Formosa

Natural places: Visit Ria Formosa wetlands by established paths or authorized boat trips. Cabanas and Tavira offer island-beach access by local boats; check last returns. Olhão provides another lagoon gateway.

Inside and paid camping: Camping Ria Formosa in Cabanas advertises tents, caravan and campervan plots, electricity, hot-water sanitary blocks, Wi-Fi, shop, restaurant and pools. Reserve the appropriate pitch size and confirm car parking and vehicle servicing.

Verified paid tariff: Its 2026/27 prices give two adults plus a small pitch up to 35 m² as €22 for September 16–June 14, €28.60 for June 15–July 31 and September 1–15, and €31.50 for August. Electricity at 16 amps adds €5.50 nightly. Confirm equipment fit, taxes and extras; larger pitches cost more.

Nearby free camping: No authorized free tent campsite was verified on the lagoon edge or barrier islands. Beach access and a boat ticket do not include camping permission.

Restaurants and culture: The campsite’s restaurant is the nearest linked dining option; check current Portuguese dishes and hours. Explore Tavira’s old streets, churches and castle setting, or Olhão’s fish-market and town atmosphere.

Practical information: The operator’s visitor information suggests about a 20-minute walk to Cabanas village and the beach boat. Estimate 6–8 km / 10–20 minutes to Tavira and 30–35 km / 30–45 minutes to Olhão. Spring and autumn suit wildlife walks; bring binoculars, a wind layer and sun protection.

Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente

Natural places: Sagres offers Atlantic beaches, headlands and coastal paths near Cabo de São Vicente. View cliffs from safe established places and use local sea-condition information before entering the water.

Inside, free and paid camping: Orbitur Sagres is an established paid base. Confirm tent or touring pitches, car parking, showers, drinking water, electricity and motorhome access. A current complete tariff was not established: request a dated total and seasonal opening. No authorized free tent option was verified at the cape or beaches.

Restaurants and culture: Ask Orbitur Sagres about its current snack-bar or restaurant; Sagres dining information lists Portuguese town options. Visit Sagres Fortress for maritime heritage, checking admission separately.

Practical information: Estimate 3–5 km / 10–15 minutes from the camping area to town or nearby beach access and 7–10 km / 15–20 minutes to Cabo de São Vicente. Spring and autumn suit hiking. Secure tent pegs, carry water and windproof clothing, and stay well back from cliff edges.

Equipment, access and responsible camping

Pack a waterproof tent, a sleeping bag and insulated mat matched to the overnight forecast, sturdy walking shoes, rain layers, drinking water, a headlamp, offline maps and a small first-aid kit. Coastal wind requires secure guy lines; mountain conditions can be much colder than the nearest town. Ask whether drinking water, electricity and vehicle servicing are available on your pitch.

Use established trails, respect closures and do not light a campfire unless the site and current restrictions expressly allow it. A viewpoint, beach car park or picnic area does not establish permission to pitch a tent. Confirm accessible facilities directly if you need step-free paths, adapted bathrooms or a level pitch.
