Montegiardino Camping Guide: Gypsum Trail & Village

Montegiardino camping is a good choice for travellers who want to combine village scenery with a geological walk. Reserve a campsite elsewhere in San Marino, visit the old centre, and decide on your walking route after checking the conditions.

Nature: the Gypsums Path

The tourism office lists the Montegiardino Gypsums Path as thematic itinerary number 3. Starting from the medieval village, the route explores the landscape associated with an old gypsum quarry and the remains of a kiln and mill.

Download the current route before leaving and check its distance, elevation and any closures with the tourist office. Do not enter quarry workings or unstable ruins. Choose a shorter out-and-back walk if the full itinerary does not suit your group, turning around before difficult terrain.

Historic centre and culture

Montegiardino’s old centre, views and church provide a rewarding visit even without a long hike. The official castelli directory describes its Lombard origins and the historic altar frontals in its nineteenth-century church. Check opening arrangements locally; access to a church interior should never be assumed.

Montegiardino camping: a paid overnight base

Centro Vacanze San Marino, Strada di San Michele 50, Cailungo, Borgo Maggiore, accepts tents, caravans and motorhomes. This is an overnight base outside Montegiardino. Ask about pitch size, electrical connection and access for your vehicle before reserving.

The 2026 tariff lists a €22 minimum per day for one person, before service and tourist taxes. The operator warns that holidays and special events may cost more. Obtain a quote covering all travellers and extras.

Can you camp for free?

No authorized free tent campsite or free motorhome overnight location has been verified for this guide. The village, trail entrances and old quarry are sightseeing locations rather than confirmed overnight places. Book a commercial pitch or obtain clear permission and confirm local requirements for an alternative.

Food after the walk

Ristorante Garden at Strada di San Michele 50 in Borgo Maggiore offers Italian and Romagna cooking and pizza at the camping base. It is outside Montegiardino, useful after returning from your outing. Check service hours, particularly before a late walk.

Access, season and equipment

For planning only, allow around 25–35 minutes by car from Cailungo to Montegiardino, depending on the route and traffic. Check the actual journey before departure. Leave a large vehicle at the campsite when practical, and ask about suitable parking near the village rather than driving into narrow historic lanes.

Spring and autumn can offer comfortable walking conditions. In summer, start early, carry enough water and leave time for shade breaks. After prolonged rain, ask about slippery or damaged sections. Bring sturdy footwear, sun protection, a waterproof layer, a charged phone and an offline route.

A simple day combines the village in the morning, a walk suited to your ability, and dinner back at camp. Add Faetano and the Marano valley on another day rather than rushing both outings. Our San Marino camping guide links all nine castelli.
