Reykjavík Camping Guide: Laugardalur, Gardens & Sculpture

This Reykjavík camping guide focuses on a relaxed Capital Region stay in Laugardalur, pairing green city walks with Reykjavík’s art and food. Use it as a local itinerary within Reykjavík and the Capital Region, with time to adapt to Iceland’s weather. Sources and published tariffs checked on 16 October 2026. Prices are Icelandic krónur (ISK); the tariff year and limitations are stated below.

Reykjavík camping guide: nature and walks

Start in Laugardalur, where the botanical garden provides a gentle introduction to Icelandic plants and horticulture. Follow paths through the park and choose a short city walk when conditions are poor. This is an accessible urban base rather than an isolated wilderness camp. Save longer hill walks for a suitable forecast and a route matched to your experience.

Established camping and checked prices

Reykjavík Eco Campsite, Sundlaugavegur 32, publishes 2026 online-discount prices per pitch including one adult: ISK 3,555 for a tent without electricity, ISK 3,735 for a camper without electricity, or ISK 5,715 for a camper with 16A power. Add ISK 3,150 for each additional adult aged 13+ and ISK 400 lodging tax per unit per night. Two adults in one tent therefore total ISK 7,105; two in a powered camper total ISK 9,265. Confirm other booking channels and extras. The operator describes year-round opening, but only Area A operates from 15 October to 15 April; tent Area B is closed then. Check suitability for your equipment before winter travel.

Confirm the final charge for your dates, party and equipment. Ask about pitch access, drinking water, wastewater disposal, showers and cancellation terms. A published price does not guarantee availability, and seasonal services can change.

Free authorized camping nearby

No specific free overnight site has been verified for this itinerary. Use the established campsite when permission is unclear. Tent access rules, protected-area restrictions and landowner conditions must be checked for the exact location; they do not provide general permission for overnight camping vehicles. See our national guide for the official source and practical distinctions.

Restaurant and local food

Café Flóra in the botanical garden is a convenient café stop during a park day. Check seasonal opening and the current lunch selection before walking there for a meal. It allows a slower day with little driving.

Culture beyond the campsite

The same official valley guide introduces Ásmundarsafn, part of Reykjavík Art Museum, with sculpture by Ásmundur Sveinsson. Pair the museum with the garden, checking exhibition hours and admission separately.

Season, access and equipment

June–August is the simplest tent-camping window; shoulder seasons need careful weather and opening checks. From the campsite to the main Laugardalur attractions, plan short local walks, roughly 1–2 km depending on the entrance. Central Reykjavík is a separate outing of a few kilometres: allow around 10–15 minutes by car in normal traffic. These are estimates. A city stay is a useful first stop after a flight before attempting long drives.

Pack waterproof and windproof clothing, insulated bedding, a suitable sleeping mat, sturdy shoes and offline maps. Check SafeTravel, the Icelandic Met Office and official road information before setting out. Never use a stove or barbecue inside a tent, and leave fragile moss and vegetation undisturbed.
