This Federated States of Micronesia camping guide connects four state articles covering Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. It brings together selected nature, cultural visits, restaurants and overnight enquiries. The focus is a confirmed, locally approved stay rather than an assumption that any beach can be used for camping.
Federated States of Micronesia camping: four-state directory
The FSM is the country covered here, rather than the wider Micronesia region. Palau, the Marshall Islands, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are outside this national directory. Each state article provides a return link; the series is an introduction, not an inventory of every island or municipality.
Yap
Private-Land Walks, Stone Money and Colonia Stays
Chuuk
Lagoon Excursions, Weno Rooms and Cultural Visits
Pohnpei
Island Camping Enquiries, Rainforest and Nan Madol
Kosrae
Waterfall Walks, Lelu Heritage and Supplied-Room Bases
Where camping has been documented
Pohnpei’s article identifies the Eco-Adventure Guide’s descriptions of permission-based island camping as leads requiring current host confirmation. Its historical material does not establish an immediately bookable campground, a present tariff or nationwide camping rights. Confirm the actual island and responsible owner before travelling.
For Yap, Chuuk and Kosrae, this research did not establish a current authorized tent pitch and numeric camping tariff. Their articles therefore identify supplied-room alternatives where documented. A room rate is never presented as a camping price, and a hotel lawn is not treated as an approved pitch.
Landowner permission and free stays
No verified nationwide free-camping network is claimed. Ask for express permission for the exact overnight location and agree any fees and maximum stay. Sightseeing access, a boat landing and an invitation to a community activity are separate from permission to sleep on the land.
On Yap, the tourism bureau explicitly describes private ownership of trails, land, beaches and reef areas. Across the itinerary, resolve local access through the actual owner, host and relevant authority. A general travel guide cannot grant permission on their behalf.
Paid stays and price interpretation
State articles label room references, tax exclusions and uncertain tariff validity. The Yap operator publishes hotel-only prices and separate dive packages; these must not be mixed. Chuuk’s bureau table and Kosrae’s historic visitor page need fresh quotes for the intended dates.
Ask for the total in US dollars with the actual occupancy, dates, taxes, meals and transfers. Where no current camping fee was established, the article says so. Neither an old rate nor an activity ticket establishes a free overnight stay.
Travel checks and official sources
Read the UK safety and security advice. At this October 28, 2026 check it identifies higher crime risk in Chuuk and at night, hazardous currents and waves, and exposure to cyclones, flooding and drought. Follow current local instructions and arrange appropriate guides and transport.
Check your nationality’s requirements with the responsible authorities before booking. The national tourism regulations page is a starting point for enquiries, not a substitute for current immigration instructions or airline document checks. Confirm airport charges rather than assuming older published amounts apply to every journey.
Flights, boats and distances
The national travel information page outlines air access and onward planning. Verify the actual carrier schedule, baggage allowance and connections. Do not reuse historic flight times from an undated accommodation page.
Four states do not form a simple road circuit. Identify each airport, hotel, boat landing and excursion destination separately. No universal campground-to-attraction distance is possible where the overnight site is not yet agreed. Obtain local estimates and include waiting, sea conditions and the return transfer.
Food, drinking water and equipment
The local articles name town or hotel dining enquiries and link their source directories. A restaurant in Colonia, Weno, Kolonia on Pohnpei or a Kosrae resort does not provide automatic catering on an offshore island. Confirm the actual menu, opening and meal inclusions before leaving a hub.
Agree safe drinking water, food storage, cooking permission and waste return. Bring suitable rain protection, insect protection, lighting and waterproof bags. If camping is accepted, clarify tent or shelter hire and sanitation rather than assuming lodge facilities are shared.
Culture and suitable dates
Ask before photography and entry into private or sacred spaces. Yap’s stone-money banks, Nan Madol on Pohnpei and Lelu on Kosrae are cultural destinations with their own visitor arrangements. A cultural-site visit does not imply overnight access.
Respect Kosrae’s Sunday practices and arrange activities with the host. Sea excursions and forest walks require current forecasts and local conditions, even when a tourism page describes a generally favourable season. Keep spare time for changed plans.
Confirm the actual overnight product
Before paying, distinguish a supplied room, a hut, an excursion and an independent tent stay. Confirm who receives you, where you sleep, what is supplied and how you return. Use the source links within each state guide to resolve remaining questions with the operator or tourism office.
