Southland New Zealand Camping Guide: Henry Creek Camping and Te Anau Heritage

Southland camping planning starts with the actual overnight product, land manager and travel dates. This guide introduces selected nature and cultural options in Southland, New Zealand; it is not an exhaustive list of towns or campgrounds. Distinguish a tent pitch, a motorhome site and supplied accommodation before reserving.

Southland camping: nature and activities

Henry Creek offers a Lake Te Anau setting on the Milford Road route. Treat Milford Sound, lake activities and any Great Walk as separate products with their own access, weather and reservation requirements.

Designated camping and paid stays

Henry Creek Campsite publishes NZ$18/adult and NZ$9/child ages 5–17 per night, free under-fives. It requires booking; the checked window extends to June 30, 2027, and no places are held for walk-ins. DOC describes campervan accommodation and smaller forest sites. Confirm the actual product, facilities, dimensions and waste arrangements before reserving.

Free camping, permissions and stay limits

No free overnight site with fully verified current permission and a numeric maximum stay was established for this selected itinerary. Check the relevant land manager and local signs before choosing an alternative; a scenic car park is not automatically an overnight site.

Tents, cars and motorhomes

Confirm the booking category and stand dimensions for your actual equipment. Check toilets, drinking water, cooking facilities, showers, electricity and approved waste disposal individually. A nonpowered site does not include a supplied tent, and a parked car is not automatically an authorized overnight stay. Ask about hire equipment separately.

Culture and interpretation

Fiordland Vintage Machinery Museum at 132 Sandy Brown Road, Te Anau, preserves tractors, machinery and local-history material. Opening depends on season and member availability, particularly weekends and holidays, so contact the museum before making a specific visit.

Restaurants and food planning

The Southland tourism listing for Olive Tree Cafe identifies a Te Anau venue at 52 Town Centre, with cafe meals, burgers, fish and chips and local cuisine. Confirm opening, menu and dietary arrangements; no meal tariff is promised. It is a town stop rather than a restaurant inside Henry Creek.

Season, distances and equipment

DOC places the campground 23km north of Te Anau on Milford Road, with a gravel approach. Milford Sound remains a separate onward journey. Check present road conditions, heavy-rain forecasts and track alerts, and carry waterproof layers, insect protection and supplies for your actual activity.

Dated sources and final checks

Research checked October 29, 2026. Prices are New Zealand dollars and apply only to the stated product, age group and season. Reconfirm the complete total, extras and booking conditions directly before paying. Where no numeric maximum stay was verified, ask the manager rather than assuming unlimited occupancy.

Check the national guide’s official weather, DOC and freedom-camping sources before departure. Use current local alerts for the selected site and activity. Respect mana whenua and community hosts, protect wildlife and carry out waste where required. Pack footwear, weather protection, lighting and the supplies your actual stay needs.
