Karnali Camping Guide: Rara Lake and Dolpo Expedition Planning

Karnali camping rewards travelers who plan for distance, limited services and changing transport conditions. Rara Lake is a documented camping destination, while Dolpo can demand a much more substantial expedition. Choose one achievable journey instead of combining remote names into a rushed itinerary.

Travel planning note — reviewed 24 October 2026: check current official travel advice before booking. Confirm local access, weather and overnight permission with the responsible operator or park office.

Nature and places to explore

Rara National Park provides a lake-and-forest destination. Shey-Phoksundo National Park offers another dramatic landscape in the Dolpo region. Both deserve their own transport and walking plans. A blue lake in a photograph says little about current trail access, overnight permissions or the time needed to arrive safely.

Use the Nepal Tourism Board’s destination information as background, then confirm the conditions for your travel dates.

Karnali camping: paid stays and approved sites

The Nepal Tourism Board’s Rara guide lists camping and lodges. Use that as a destination lead, then ask the park and a registered operator for an approved pitch, sanitation arrangements and current availability. No named self-service campground with a current nightly tariff was verified for this article.

For Phoksundo or a longer Dolpo journey, request a supported itinerary identifying every overnight stop. Ask whether tents, food, porters, fuel, toilets and waste transport are included. A route through a restricted area needs additional documentation; visiting the wider region is not a single uniform permit category.

Free camping and permission

No unrestricted free campsite was verified. An apparently empty lakeshore is still protected land; obtain a named-site approval and follow the park’s waste and fire rules.

Entry fees and the real trip budget

Rara’s published entry fee is NPR 3,000 for other foreign nationals, NPR 1,500 for SAARC visitors and NPR 100 for Nepalis. Source: NTB’s central park-entry table. These are entry charges, not nightly camping rates. Reconfirm additional taxes and activity fees directly.

Restricted-area fee information for Dolpo can differ between official summaries. Have the agency confirm the exact route classification and current Immigration charge in writing before paying. Consult the Immigration fee schedule; the national-park entry fee is a separate expense.

Check NTB’s route-specific guide and TIMS requirements with a registered trekking agency. Camping consent and other permits remain separate.

Request an itemized quote covering accommodation, transport, meals, guiding, equipment and permissions. No universal tent-pitch rate applies to the whole province. Ask about deposits, cancellation terms and alternatives if access closes.

Food and dining

Treat remote-camp meals as part of the expedition plan. Ask the agency to list the food carried, cooking staff, water arrangements and dietary substitutions. At lodge stops, confirm what the kitchen can provide that day. No reliable current standalone restaurant menu or meal tariff was verified for the lake camps.

Culture and considerate visits

Allow time for community visits in the places where you actually stay. Ask a local guide about monastery access and photography, especially in Dolpo’s culturally sensitive settings. Use local services where practical, but do not assume a household can supply food or equipment for an unannounced group.

Getting there and choosing a season

Rara commonly involves planning via Nepalgunj and Talcha or an overland-and-walking alternative. Confirm current services rather than treating published flight or walking times as guaranteed. Keep several contingency days in a remote itinerary and avoid a tight connection to an international departure.

The tourism board highlights spring and autumn windows for Rara, but current weather and trail conditions should decide the departure. Bring appropriate cold-weather equipment and keep the itinerary conservative. Obtain insurance suited to the actual altitude and evacuation needs, and agree on a communications plan before leaving reliable coverage.

Before you book

Confirm the exact overnight location, current authorization and a realistic arrival plan. Pack out waste, protect water sources and use only approved cooking arrangements. Check our Nepal camping guide to compare the seven provinces before choosing a route.
