An island stay with a clear overnight plan
Atauro Island camping can include a professionally managed tented stay rather than an independent beach pitch. Begin around Beloi if you want a defined arrival point and booked accommodation, then arrange any village visits or boat excursions through local hosts. Leave enough time to enjoy the island instead of making a boat crossing the only event of the day.
Tented accommodation and published rates
The local tourism association lists Compass Atauro Beach Eco-Lodge in Beloi, about a five-minute walk from the harbour. Its installed tented units have shared toilets and showers. Published rates are US$50 per person sharing or US$70 for individual occupancy, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. Reconfirm the quote and what “individual” means for your party before paying. These are accommodation rates, not a bring-your-own-tent pitch tariff.
Free camping and a non-tent alternative
No authorized free pitch was verified. Ask the local tourism association about any currently managed camping opportunity and obtain permission for the exact site. For a cabin alternative, Barry’s Place publishes US$60 per person per night from 1 January 2026, including three meals, tea and coffee. Its page describes cabins; do not assume that this price buys tent camping.
Reefs, village walks and craft visits
Book snorkelling or diving with an operator who can assess conditions and any local marine rules. Avoid standing on coral and never remove marine life. Arrange craft visits and village walks with hosts, ask before taking portraits and pay agreed guide fees. For longer inland walks, confirm the route and return transport before setting off.
Food and facilities
Meal-inclusive accommodation can simplify an island stay. Check drinking water, dietary requirements, electricity hours and luggage storage with the property. Barry’s Place lists day-visitor lunch and dinner at US$10 each; ask about availability before turning up. These are separate meal options, and the lodge does not allow guests to self-cater.
Getting there without rushing the return
Confirm your Dili–Atauro boat, landing point, baggage allowance and onward pickup with the provider. Marine conditions can cancel a trip. Keep a mainland buffer before an international flight, and carry cash, sun protection, a headlamp and dry bags. A short-looking sea crossing can still be unsuitable in poor conditions; follow the skipper’s decision.
