This Tibet (Xizang) camping guide helps you choose an outdoor base and separate a confirmed overnight booking from a sightseeing suggestion. Start with the landscape and transport you can realistically cover, then arrange accommodation for your dates.
Nature and outdoor visits
Use an approved itinerary to choose mountain scenery and cultural stops. Lhasa, Nyingchi and Shigatse involve different elevations and travel days; independent camping should not be the starting assumption for a foreign visitor.
Managed camping and paid accommodation
A June 2026 regional tourism notice identifies two self-drive camp locations in Shigatse’s Everest Cultural and Creative Park. This is a domestic-travel facility lead, not confirmation that a foreign visitor can book independently. A specialist operator must confirm permissions and every overnight stop.
Current nightly rates are not verified in this guide. Request an itemized quote in CNY stating whether it covers a pitch, furnished tent, cabin or rental RV. Confirm toilets, showers, drinking water, electricity, meals, vehicle access and any separate scenic-area admission.
Free camping and permissions
No free overnight site with confirmed access conditions and a stay limit is established here. Do not infer overnight permission from a picnic lawn, a daytime camping photograph or a scenic-area ticket. Follow the land manager’s current instructions.
Food and restaurants
Arrange food through the approved tour or host. Ask about meal times, dietary needs and supplies for long transfers. No independently bookable restaurant beside a foreign-accessible campsite is verified here.
Museums and cultural stops
Monasteries and museums require respectful conduct and current visitor arrangements. Ask before photographing inside religious sites.
Season, access and equipment
High elevation and changing weather require a carefully paced itinerary and an appropriate health and contingency plan. Seek qualified advice for altitude-sensitive travel rather than relying on a campsite description. Current FCDO guidance says foreign visitors need a permit arranged through a specialist agent and must travel on an organized tour. Confirm the latest requirements with your operator; permissions can change. See regional travel guidance.
Carry suitable footwear, water, sun protection, rain protection and an appropriate warm layer. Confirm the last arrival time and return transport before leaving town. Ask the operator whether your passport, vehicle and overnight product can be accommodated; do not assume all camping packages provide the same service.
Sources and planning status
Source checked October 22, 2026: destination or camping source. A dated rating or government feature is evidence of the named place, not a live availability check. Prices and unconfirmed facilities must be checked directly before travel.
