Basilicata camping offers a memorable combination of Ionian scenery and ancient history. This guide uses Metaponto as a coastal base, with the museum and archaeological sites as separate daytime outings.

Basilicata camping: nature and outdoor visits
Choose an early walk along Metaponto’s coast and its pinewood setting. The national tourism guide introduces the beaches and heritage landscape. Keep to open access routes and avoid midday heat.
Established camping and published rates
Parco Vacanze Olympus, Via Lungomare, Metaponto Lido, publishes 2026 motorhome-stop tariffs. The ordinary figure is €24 for 1 April–3 May, €32 for 1–28 June and €45 for 27 July–23 August. The table also has guest and extra-occupant columns; obtain confirmation of the included party, billing period, electricity, water and disposal before treating a figure as your total. This is a motorhome option: tent travellers must ask whether a suitable pitch is offered. Reservations and operating dates require direct confirmation.
Free camping and permission
No specific free overnight campsite was verified for this itinerary. Use the established paid option above or confirm a designated alternative with its manager and local authorities. A beach, picnic spot, trailhead or ordinary car park is not proof of camping permission. Check local signs, protected-area rules and vehicle restrictions before stopping.
Culture and heritage
The National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto adds context to the ancient Greek settlements. Check museum and archaeological-park opening arrangements separately and allow a half-day for your selected visits.
Where to eat
Ristorante Colucci in Metaponto serves seafood and Lucanian dishes. Check current opening days, its location and reservations directly before planning an evening meal.
Practical Basilicata camping information
Metaponto Lido to the museum area is a short local drive, approximately 5–7 km and 10–15 minutes depending on your route. Spring and early autumn are useful for combining outdoor visits with sightseeing. Carry water, a hat and footwear suitable for exposed archaeological ground.
A relaxed two-night plan
Arrive with enough daylight to check the pitch and facilities. Keep the first evening close to camp, then spend the full day on Ionian scenery and Magna Graecia. Leave room for meals, weather changes and local transfers. Before departure, dispose of rubbish and wastewater in the proper facilities and confirm your next site’s arrival arrangements.
Source and tariff check: 16 October 2026. Published prices are reference checks, not live booking quotes or proof of availability. The quoted year and dates matter; do not carry a 2026 price into a later season. Confirm taxes, extras, services and the full amount directly with the operator. Distances and times are approximate planning estimates.
