This Glarus camping guide brings together Klöntalersee scenery, a seasonal nature campsite and Glarus heritage. Use the authorized base below for a relaxed regional stay, with time for a nature outing, a local meal and a cultural visit. Camping costs are in Swiss francs (CHF); published prices were checked on 16 October 2026.
Glarus camping guide: nature and routes
The Klöntal lake circuit provides a starting point for route planning, but check distance, terrain and the return before attempting the whole walk. A short shoreline section may suit your party better. The lake is surrounded by mountain terrain: footwear, weather and daylight matter even on a trip centred on water. Stay on designated paths and leave sensitive shore areas undisturbed.
Authorized camping and verified price reference
Camping Vorauen accepts tents, caravans and motorhomes. Its 2026 season ran 18 April–4 October, so this is a seasonal reference for future planning, not an open October overnight recommendation. Adults are CHF 13 per night; a mini tent is CHF 9 in low season or CHF 11 in the listed high season. Car parking is CHF 8 and adult guest tax CHF 3. Two adults with a mini tent and car total CHF 49 in low season including those guest taxes, before any other charges. Ordinary pitches have no electricity. The operator does not reserve touring spaces; confirm the next season directly.
Request a complete quote for your dates, party and equipment. Confirm reception hours, vehicle limits, tent acceptance and seasonal services before travelling. The figures are planning references rather than a live booking offer.
Free overnight camping
No specific free authorized overnight site has been verified for this itinerary. Use the named campsite or obtain explicit permission from the relevant landowner and local authority. A lakeside car park or picnic area does not by itself establish permission to camp.
Restaurant and local food
Hotel Rhodannenberg’s restaurant, Klöntalerstrasse 36, offers a meal overlooking the lake. It is at another part of the lake, so include travel rather than assuming it is inside Vorauen. Check the seasonal menu and service; the operator advertises Glarus specialities through regional tourism.
Culture beyond the campsite
The Museum des Landes Glarus at the Freulerpalast in Näfels introduces regional history in a historic building. Check current exhibition dates and opening before making it the focus of a travel day. This provides a cultural contrast to the lake landscape.
Practical itinerary, season and access
Allow roughly 20–30 km and 30–45 minutes by car between Vorauen and Näfels, depending on the route and conditions. For a lake-centred stay, use one day for a short walk and another for culture. Mountain access and bus services are seasonal; confirm them before travelling. Outside the camping season, book another explicitly open accommodation rather than staying on closed grounds.
Pack a waterproof layer, suitable walking shoes, drinking water, warm bedding and an offline map. Choose a marked route that matches your fitness and daylight; check local conditions before heading into higher terrain. Keep wastewater for designated facilities and follow current fire restrictions.
