Saxony-Anhalt Camping Guide: Harz Trails, Wernigerode and Camping

This Saxony-Anhalt camping guide combines Harz mountain scenery with a cultural day in Wernigerode with an authorized overnight base. Plan a few unhurried days in one area rather than trying to cover the whole state in a weekend. The route below brings together nature, a cultural outing, food and clear camping costs.

Saxony-Anhalt camping guide: nature and walking

The Harz crosses state boundaries, and this route uses its Saxony-Anhalt side near Schierke and Elend. Choose woodland paths for an easier first outing and plan any Brocken excursion around current weather, route conditions and daylight. The summit area can feel very different from sheltered lower paths. The official state overview also introduces the wider state’s cultural landscapes.

Choose a marked route that suits your fitness and the available daylight. Carry water, a picnic, rain protection and an offline map. A scenic lake shore or forest car park is a daytime destination unless overnight camping is explicitly permitted there.

Authorized camping and verified tariffs

Harz Mountain Camp am Schierker Stern, between Schierke and Elend, publishes a season tariff valid until 2 November 2026. Adults cost €10 each and a small one- or two-person tent €7.50, making €27.50 for two adults with that tent before a car, electricity and tourist tax. A car is €3 per day and power €0.80 per kWh. Showers are free for registered camping guests. A separate short-stay motorhome area costs €22.50 including two adults, one dog and specified services, with electricity and tourist tax extra; awnings are not permitted there.

Prices were checked on 16 October 2026. Confirm availability, seasonal dates and the full charge for your party before booking. No free authorized overnight alternative has been verified for this particular route.

Restaurant and local meals

The camp has a guest bistro at reception. Ask what food is being served during your stay rather than assuming full restaurant service. For a more extensive meal, use your Wernigerode outing to compare the town’s current menus and reserve a table.

Check current kitchen hours and dietary options directly. Bring a simple arrival-day meal so a delayed journey does not depend on a restaurant still serving. Food and attraction tickets are separate from the camping figures.

Culture and a suggested stay

Wernigerode Castle is a useful cultural counterpoint to the forest. Confirm opening times, the uphill approach and available tours. English guided tours have specific arrangements, so check them directly when language matters. Leave time for the old town rather than rushing straight back after the museum.

Arrive and settle in on day one, then take a short local walk. Keep day two for your main nature outing and day three for culture, with time for a relaxed meal. In poor weather, shorten the outdoor section and check an indoor alternative before travelling.

Practical travel information

The operator lists normal arrivals from 14:00 to 18:00, with other arrangements requiring advance contact. Services and reception are reduced during part of November and December; confirm exactly what is available. Bring warm bedding and weatherproof footwear even outside winter, and check road conditions before arriving in a large vehicle.

Use designated facilities for rubbish and wastewater, respect quiet hours and check current fire restrictions. Ask about accessible pitches and sanitary facilities if needed. Continue through our Germany camping guide and federal-state directory.
