Flanders camping combines North Sea beaches, heathland, wetlands and historic towns. Choose a permitted overnight base, then plan walks and cycle rides around it. A nature reserve entrance, beach car park or riverside path is a sightseeing stop unless the manager explicitly authorizes an overnight stay.
Explore the five provinces
West Flanders: combine coastal dunes and beaches with Bruges or Ypres. East Flanders: use Puyenbroeck as a serviced base and explore Ghent or the Scheldt landscape. Antwerp: combine the city’s art and heritage with quieter woodland trips in the Kempen. Flemish Brabant: consider Grimbergen, Leuven and forest outings. Limburg: prioritize Hoge Kempen, Duinengordel and Bosland for hiking and cycling.
The official nature guide introduces Scheldt wetlands and varied walking landscapes. For a coastal itinerary, use the Flemish destination guide to select dune walks. Follow marked paths and reserve swimming for designated areas.
Camping inside or beside a nature destination
Hoge Kempen offers designated pole camping and nearby commercial campsites. The park’s overnight page lists Terhills at €15 per person for one night, with online booking, a maximum of ten guests and tent hours of 5 p.m.–9:30 a.m. Toilets, showers and drinking water are available near the visitor centre. This is a paid walking base, not a motorhome pitch.
Authorized free camping for walkers and cyclists
Thorpark is free but requires booking for each person. The park lists a maximum of ten people and three tents, arrival on foot or bicycle and overnight hours of 6 p.m.–10 a.m. There is no drinking water supply; carry enough for the evening and onward walk.
Duinengordel’s own camping page says its free sites require reservations, while the park overview still says reservations are unavailable. Use the current booking system and confirm with the manager before departure. Vehicle access and fires are prohibited there. These limited bivouacs do not authorize camping elsewhere in the forest.
Paid campsites and published 2026 prices
The provincial Puyenbroeck camping page advertises individual pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes from €31.50 per night, and a touring cyclist meadow from €13. It lists electricity and drinking-water provision for the meadow and does not permit pets. Check the selected package’s guest allowance and full total.
These are 2026 starting prices; the province explicitly says 2027 rates will be indexed. Confirm opening dates, showers, vehicle length, cancellation terms and availability. A bicycle meadow tariff should not be applied to a car-and-tent booking.
Restaurants, museums and heritage
For a Flemish Brabant base, Het Fenikshof, Abdijstraat 20 in Grimbergen, is a bar and restaurant near the abbey; check its current menu and hours. Its menu helps you select a meal before a village walk.
Use VISITFLANDERS arts and heritage for museums, churches and historic centres. Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and Mechelen offer different cultural afternoons. Ypres adds First World War remembrance. Confirm opening days and ticket conditions separately from camping.
Season, access, distances and equipment
Late spring through early autumn usually provides the easiest tent-camping window. Wind can be strong on the coast, and rain can make woodland paths muddy. October trips need shorter walking plans and explicit confirmation that a campsite remains open.
As broad road-planning estimates, Puyenbroeck to central Ghent is roughly 25–35 km / 35–50 minutes. Grimbergen to central Leuven is roughly 35–45 km / 40–60 minutes. The walking approach from a Hoge Kempen bivouac depends on the booked site and trail stage; check it on a current map rather than assuming car access.
Bring a waterproof tent, insulated mat, suitable sleeping bag, rain layers, walking shoes, water, a headlamp and offline route maps. Keep cyclists’ overnight equipment compact. Motorhomes need a serviced pitch suited to their dimensions; a tent-only forest reservation cannot substitute for it.
Sources and published prices checked October 13, 2026. Distances are approximate planning estimates. Confirm current access, reservations, operating dates and fees with each manager.
