Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Camping: Verdon, Alps & Coast

Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur camping spans canyon country, Alpine valleys and the Mediterranean. La Palud-sur-Verdon is the detailed base here. Use another campsite for Marseille, the coast or Mercantour, and check fire-related access before every summer walk.

Departments covered by this regional guide

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Vaucluse.

Natural places to visit

The La Palud-sur-Verdon visitor guide provides a base for gorge viewpoints and marked walking itineraries. A Route des Crêtes viewpoint day differs from a demanding canyon trail, whose transport and equipment need advance planning.

Elsewhere, consider the Calanques, Mercantour’s mountains, Luberon woodland and the Var coast on separate stages. Cliffs, high passes and sea access are day destinations unless an overnight arrangement is expressly authorized.

Camping inside the destination

Camping municipal Le Grand Canyon provides an established La Palud base about 800 m from the village, with a footpath connection. Its advertised 2026 season runs April 3–November 1. Book the correct tent, caravan, van or motorhome category.

For a separate Calanques visit, the park authority prohibits camping and bivouac in its core throughout the year; use a licensed base outside that area.

Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac

No verified free serviced tent campground was established for the La Palud itinerary. Mercantour has its own regulated bivouac exception, normally 19:00–09:00 and more than one hour’s walk from the relevant boundary or road access. It cannot be applied to Calanques, ordinary coastal parking or a motorhome.

Confirm the exact park, parcel and dates, and request current instructions from its manager. A legal walking bivouac is not a promise of a free equipped campground.

The 2026 Grand Canyon listing displays a package range of €14.30–€16.20 and electricity at €4/day. Separate component lines include adults at €4.58–€5.18 and motorhome/van equipment at €4.70–€5.50. Ask which formula covers your occupants and equipment and whether tax is additional; do not add every line to a package.

Hot showers, water, electrical hookups, laundry and grey/black-water disposal are advertised. Specify footprint, length, arrival time and any accessibility needs when reserving.

Restaurants, museums and cultural stops

Le Styx in La Palud offers French brasserie cooking. Confirm opening, the seasonal menu and reservations. The Maison des Gorges du Verdon écomusée explains the canyon’s landscape and local history.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is a separate village outing. On a broader trip, Marseille, Avignon and Nice warrant their own cultural stages and closer overnight bases.

Best season, access, distances and equipment

From Le Grand Canyon, the village is about 800 m on its footpath. Allow roughly 1–4 km to the selected Route des Crêtes entry, then the full chosen circuit; Moustiers is roughly 25–35 km / 35–50 minutes by road. Canyon trailheads require additional walking and any shuttle arrangements.

Spring and autumn often suit lower walks; summer needs early starts, water and current fire-access checks. Higher Alpine routes require a snow assessment. Bring waterproof layers, insulation, grippy shoes, a headlamp and offline maps. Do not use a closed road or trail as a campsite-access shortcut.
