Île-de-France Camping: Fontainebleau, Loing & Paris Escapes

Île-de-France camping can combine forest walking with village culture without using central Paris as a tent base. Grez-sur-Loing offers an established riverside option near Fontainebleau. Distinguish its serviced pitches from the forest’s limited one-night bivouac areas.

Departments covered by this regional guide

Paris, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne and Val-d’Oise.

Natural places to visit

Explore Fontainebleau’s marked forest paths and sandstone landscapes, then give the Loing valley a shorter village-and-river day. Check the ONF access map for current sectors and closures before choosing a trail.

Bouldering needs suitable equipment, partners and conditions; a walking visit does not require climbing. Further regional options include Rambouillet woodland and the French Vexin, which need closer bases for a relaxed itinerary.

Camping inside the destination

Camping Les Prés at Grez-sur-Loing accepts tents, caravans and motorhomes near the village and river. The tourist listing gives a March 16–November 1, 2026 season. Reserve the exact pitch and confirm late-season facilities.

Forest camping is limited to authorized arrangements. Daytime parking at a trailhead does not make a vehicle an approved overnight base.

Nearby free camping and authorized bivouac

The ONF identifies three official areas: Grande Vallée at Bourron-Marlotte, the Hippodrome de la Solle area and the Faisanderie site. Its current guidance describes free-access bivouac for individuals or small groups, limited to one night, without fire or serviced facilities. Confirm each site is currently open and carry water.

These are walk-in bivouac arrangements, not full-service free campgrounds. Groups, events and motorized overnight parking need their own rules and authorization.

The Les Prés listing displays a 2026 package starting at €12 for one or two people, pitch and specified touring equipment. Tourist tax is listed separately at €1.30 per adult/night. The page also lists an electrical supplement despite mentioning electricity in its package wording; obtain a confirmed dated quote before budgeting.

Laundry, heated sanitary facilities and a motorhome service area are advertised. Confirm water, showers, electrical inclusion, car access and equipment size. A starting rate without a maximum is not a guaranteed price for your dates.

Restaurants, museums and cultural stops

Le Relais de Grez provides a local restaurant stop in Grez-sur-Loing. Confirm its menu and opening hours. Fontainebleau’s château and Nemours’ château-museum or prehistory museum complement forest walking; reserve any timed admission separately.

A Paris culture day is a separate transport plan. Compare train and local connections with driving, and do not assume the last return service runs late enough for an evening outing.

Best season, access, distances and equipment

From Grez, estimate roughly 10–15 km / 15–25 minutes to Fontainebleau town or the chosen forest entrance, and around 8–12 km / 10–20 minutes to Nemours. The campsite is about 200 m from its village. Route selection and traffic can change those figures.

Spring and autumn suit forest walks; summer camping needs reservations and a heat plan. Pack water, waterproofs, layers, footwear, offline maps and a headlamp. Follow sector closures and leave a clear return margin even on a short route.

Reviewed October 13, 2026. Prices are dated published references, not guaranteed quotes. Driving distances and times are broad planning estimates from the stated base; add walking time and confirm current routes, seasonal opening, permissions and booking conditions.
